RMU Drops Opener, 3-0

The Colonials outshot RPI, but couldn’t find the back of the net

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team fell in their season opener to the RPI Engineers, 3-0.

Despite outshooting the Engineers, 25-20, the Colonials could not push the puck past goaltender Kelly O'Brien.

RPI jumped on top at the 9:51 mark of the first period, as Missy Mankey batted in a rebound off a shot from Laura Horwood. Katie Rooney was credited with the secondary assist.

Less than three minutes into the second period, the Engineers would extend their lead to two. Ali Svoboda corralled a pass from Taylor Mahoney on the power play and buried it behind junior goaltender Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School). The strike was RPI's only one with a man advantage.

In the third period, RPI would put it away with an unassisted strike from Lauren Wash. The Colonials would try to answer with multiple attempts from junior Rebecca Vint (Caldeon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) and freshman Brittany Howard (St. Thomas, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas), but O'Brien stood tall.

RMU served seven penalties for a total of 14 minutes, while the Engineers were penalized six times for 12 minutes. The Colonials were 1-7 on the penalty kill and 0-6 on the power play.

RMU looks to rebound tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. when they end their season opening series with RPI.
