Pittsburgh, Pa. - With the continued team success of
Robert Morris University men's hockey, individual accolades naturally follow.
For the third time this calendar year, two Colonials have earned
Travel Team USA Atlantic Hockey awards in the same week, as
Cody Wydo (Player of the Week) and
Dalton Izyk (Goalie of the Week) were
honored by the conference Tuesday.
Wydo, a senior forward from Southgate, Michigan, has continued his prolific scoring pace of 2013-14 by netting 10 points (6g, 4a) in his first six games this season. He put up four last weekend at Army, capped by his fourth career hat trick in
Saturday's 3-3 tie. The active goal-scoring leader in Division I has 71 career tallies and is currently second in the nation in goals and points as he puts himself in the early conversation for the Hobey Baker Award.
This is the fifth time in the past two seasons that Wydo has been dubbed the AHC's Player of the Week, including the final two weeks of last season as the Colonials won their first conference championship and made their NCAA tournament debut. Twice last spring Wydo shared the spotlight with RMU goalies, with
Terry Shafer (Feb. 4) and Izyk (March 25) joining him on the podium.
It was Izyk's turn this week, as he has teamed up with Shafer to backstop Robert Morris' program-best 5-0-1 start. The sophomore from Oswego, New York, claimed his second weekly honor this season after recording 36 saves in RMU's
3-0 victory Friday night at West Point, his second shutout in three starts.
Izyk boasts an incredible .990 save percentage this season (one goal allowed on 98 shots), and his career mark of .934 is the best in RMU program history among goalies who have played in at least 10 games. Not only does Izyk lead the nation in save percentage and shutouts, his goals-against average of 0.33 is also tops.
The Colonials will try to continue their unbeaten start this weekend at the Island Sports Center when they host league rival RIT for a pair. Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at 84 Lumber Arena.
