Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Atlantic Hockey Conference announced Tuesday that three members of the Robert Morris University men's hockey team received Travel Team USA weekly awards for their performances against American International.Junior forward
David Friedmann, sophomore defenseman
Rob Mann and junior goalie
Terry Shafer were each honored by the conference after RMU (8-1-3, 6-1-3 AHC) collected a win and a tie in Massachusetts over the weekend. Friedmann received Offensive Player of the Week, Mann won the new Defensive Player of the Week award, and Shafer collected Goalie of the Week.
Friedmann, who also was named Male Student-Athlete of the Week by the RMU Athletic Department, scored his first career NCAA hat trick in
Saturday's 6-0 victory over AIC. He also had an assist in
Friday's 5-5 tie and fired a combined eight shots on goal in the two-game road series. The Toronto native contributed to the Colonials' cause in other areas, too, winning 19 of 23 faceoffs (83 percent) and finishing with a plus-4 rating on the weekend.
Mann becomes the first player ever to win Defensive Player of the Week, as the AHC will now recognize goal-prevention efforts in this way. The 6-foot-5 product of Oshawa, Ontario, blocked five shots and was a combined plus-3 against AIC. He also added a goal and an assist as RMU improved its road record to 3-0-2.
Shafer got the start Saturday night and provided the backdrop to RMU's most comfortable victory of the season, making 19 saves for his first shutout this autumn. The clean sheet was the fourth of Shafer's collegiate career, helping him win AHC Goalie of the Week for the fourth time this calendar year. The native of Penfield, New York, earned the award three consecutive times in February.
Off to their best 12-game start ever, the Colonials lead the rest of Atlantic Hockey by five points. They'll next take the ice on Dec. 5-6 against conference rival Sacred Heart at the RMU Island Sports Center.Stay connected with Pittsburgh's College Hockey Team on Twitter and Facebook.
