Wydo & Izyk Claim Atlantic Hockey Monthly Awards

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The offseason couldn't stop the rising Robert Morris University men's hockey team, and the same goes on the individual level.

Atlantic Hockey announced Tuesday that senior forward Cody Wydo and sophomore goalie Dalton Izyk won its Player of the Month and Goalie of the Month awards for October, respectively, making it back-to-back months on the podium for those two. Wydo and Izyk earned the same honors last March, as the Colonials pushed to their first conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance.

Each have continued playing critical roles while RMU has skated to the best start in program history. The 7-0-1 Colonials are one of three unbeaten Division I squads that have played more than one game, with Wydo and Izyk headlining the collective effort of Pittsburgh's College Hockey Team.

Wydo, who mounted a 31-goal, 54-point junior season, has shown no signs of slowing down in his senior year. He currently leads the nation in points with 13, with 11 of those coming in RMU's seven October games. The winger from Southgate, Michigan, had six goals and five assists as the Colonials went 6-0-1 in the season's opening month. His accomplishments also earned an honorable mention in the National Player of the Month race, as determined by the commissioners of the six D-I men's hockey conferences.

Much like Wydo, Izyk is merely continuing the pace he set in the springtime. A native of Oswego, New York, Izyk earned shutouts in two of his three October starts, compiling a .990 save percentage (97 saves on 98 shots) and a 0.33 goals-against average in the process. He currently leads all qualifying D-I goaltenders in those two categories while teaming with junior Terry Shafer to shoulder the load in the Colonials' crease.

Also, RMU freshman forward Brady Ferguson picked up an honorable mention in the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Month race. The Texas-raised Ferguson scored five points in his first six collegiate games, including three goals.

Both Wydo and Izyk were dubbed Atlantic Hockey Players of the Week on Oct. 28. The duo has claimed four weekly AHC awards apiece since the start of the 2013-14 season, which saw the Colonials win 17 of their final 26 games to overcome a 2-12-2 record on New Year's Day.

RMU has no such issues this season, as it has climbed within one game of the program's all-time longest unbeaten streak. The Colonials return to the ice Nov. 14 and 15 at 84 Lumber Arena, when they host Air Force on Men's Cancer Awareness Weekend.
