RMU Earns Third at NEC Outdoor Championships

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's track & field team concluded the 2014 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island by finishing third with 108 points.

Earning the 2014 team title was Central Connecticut State, which finished with 145 points. LIU Brooklyn earned second with 117 points, and following the Colonials were Sacred Heart (102), Wagner (80), Mount St. Mary's (78), Saint Francis U. (68), Fairleigh Dickinson (51), Bryant (38) and St. Francis Brooklyn (32).

A pair of Colonials claimed individual championships and All-NEC First Team status Sunday, as senior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) defended his title in the javelin, while junior Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) won the triple jump.

Carper posted a throw of 67.31 meters (220'10") in the javelin, while Njenga qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 15.38 meters (50'5.50"), a mark that ranks third all-time in school history in the event.

Earning All-NEC Second Team honors Sunday for Robert Morris were junior Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) and sophomore Nick Delmonaco (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview).

Witmyer finished second in the high jump thanks to a final mark of 1.98 meters (6'6"), while Delmonaco earned silver in the discus with a throw of 45.03 meters (147'9"). Senior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northen) added bronze in the discus for Robert Morris thanks to a toss of 44.84 meters (147'1").

In the track events for the Colonials, freshman Drew Gerberich (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO) earned All-NEC Rookie Team accolades in the 1,500-meter after finishing third with a time of 4:03.83. Senior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) grabbed bronze in the 800-meter thanks to a time of 1:53.94.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase featured a trio of student-athletes that scored for RMU. Sophomore Ryan Brown (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) earned fifth with a time of 9:37.43, while sophomore Richard Lednak (Apollo, Pa. / Kiski Area) finished seventh at 10:04.68. Finishing right behind Lednak in eighth was senior Michael Molchany (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata), who posted a time of 10:16.59.

Up next for Robert Morris is the IC4A/ECAC Championships, which take place May 16-18, 2014, in Princeton, N.J.
