Six To Join Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame

Five former student-athletes and one coach comprise Class of 2014

Moon Township, Pa. – The 24th annual class of inductees into the Robert Morris University Athletic Hall of Fame is comprised of five former student-athletes as well as one coach, each of whom left an indelible mark on their respective programs.
 
The six new members to join the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame as the Class of 2014 include former student-athletes Tony Lee (men's basketball; 2004-08), Melissa Lockhart (women's tennis; 1993-97), Brianne McLaughlin (women's ice hockey; 2005-09), Sugeiry Monsac (women's basketball; 2004-07) and Jeff Witmyer (men's track & field; 2004-08) as well as former head volleyball coach Tim Horsmon, who guided the Colonials from 1999 to 2002.
 
Each of the six inductees will be enshrined at the second annual RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner, which will take place Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Airport.
 
The RMU Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1991 to honor those who have made an outstanding contribution to Robert Morris University athletics. Nominations are solicited and individuals selected by the RMU Hall of Fame committee. Players, coaches and administrators are eligible five years after they have conducted their career at Robert Morris.
 
The Class of 2014 brings membership in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame to 105 individuals and one team.  A closer look at each of the six new members of the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame:
 
Tim Horsmon
Volleyball Coach
1999-2002

 
In four seasons as head coach of the Colonials, Horsmon posted an overall record of 97-50 (.660), including a record of 34-2 (.944) in Northeast Conference action. In each of his four years at the
helm, Robert Morris claimed the NEC Tournament title and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament. Three times under Horsmon's watch the Colonials also claimed NEC regular-season championships. In his first season as a collegiate head coach in 1999, the Colonials became the first women's team at RMU to qualify for an NCAA Tournament. That season he earned the first of two NEC Coach of the Year accolades, as he also claimed the award in 2002. Four members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from volleyball were coached by Horsmon, including Katie Noble (1999-2002), Darcey Miller (2001-04), Rachel Leitch (2001-04) and Megan Bell (2002-05). Bell is the program's all-time leader in kills, while Noble ranks second.

Men's Basketball
2004-08

 
A four-year letterwinner, Lee is tied with former forward Anthony Dickens (1985-90) as the program's all-time leading rebounder with 751 career caroms while ranking third all-time in school history in assists (487) and eighth in points (1,489). Lee was named the 2008 Northeast Conference Player of the Year after helping lead the Colonials to an overall record of 26-8 (.765) during his senior campaign, including a mark of 16-2 (.889) that helped RMU earn its seventh NEC regular-season title. Lee averaged 13.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game in 2007-08, establishing a Robert Morris single-season school record for assists with 217. The Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) that season, dropping an 87-81 decision at Syracuse in the first round. During his senior season, Lee recorded a pair of triple doubles in consecutive games, becoming just the sixth player in NCAA Division I history to turn the trick in back-to-back contests.

Melissa Lockhart
Women's Tennis
1993-97


In her four years as a member of the RMU women's tennis program, Lockhart combined for 110 victories on the court, including 48 wins in singles and 62 in doubles play, a career record. She helped lead the Colonials to their lone Northeast Conference championship in 1996 by teaming with Melissa Thomas to claim the Doubles Flight "A" Championship, as the duo recorded a record of 36-5 during the tournament, a winning percentage of .878 that ranks fifth in the NEC record book. Lockhart's best season came as a freshman in 1993-94, when she posted a record of 16-7 (.696) in singles action and a mark of 17-8 (.680) in doubles play. She also won 17 doubles matches in both 1994-95 and 1995-96, which stands as the RMU single-season school mark.

 
Brianne McLaughlin
Women's Ice Hockey
2005-09

 
Earning induction in her first year of eligibility, McLaughlin served as the first goaltender in program history and was a four-time All-College Hockey America (CHA) selection, earning first team honors in 2008 and 2009 as well as second team accolades in 2006 and 2007. In addition, McLaughlin also earned a spot on the 2006 All-CHA Rookie Team. In the Robert Morris career record book, McLaughlin owns school records for saves (3,809), saves per game (31.74) and shutouts (8), and she also is the NCAA Division I career leader for saves. McLaughlin owns each of the top four marks in single-season school history for saves, including 1,088 as a freshman in 2005-06 in the program's first season. McLaughlin has gone on to earn a pair of silver medals for USA Hockey as part of the Olympics, first in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2010 and again in 2014 in Sochi, Russia. She also earned gold (2011) and silver (2012) medals at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women's Championships.
 

Sugeiry Monsac
Women's Basketball
2004-07

 
Monsac played two seasons at Robert Morris after transferring from Arizona Western Junior College and helped spearhead the resurgence of the program. A native of Villa Maria in the Dominican Republic, Monsac scored 1,177 points and grabbed 689 rebounds during her career, totals that 12th and sixth, respectively, all-time at Robert Morris. Early in the 2005-06 season, Monsac suffered a season-ending injury but returned in 2006-07 and averaged 16.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and leading the Colonials with 90 steals. For those efforts she was named to the 2007 All-Northeast Conference Second team. That season RMU grabbed a share of the 2007 NEC regular-season title, and Robert Morris went on to win the NEC Tournament championship as well as the program's first bid to the NCAA Tournament.

 
Jeff Witmyer

During four seasons with the RMU men's indoor and outdoor track & field squads, Witmyer claimed four Northeast Conference individual championships in the high jump, including indoor crowns in 2005, 2007 and 2008 as well as an outdoor championship in 2008. He is also one of two male student-athletes at Robert Morris to claim an IC4A Championship, as he won the high jump in 2008. At the 2008 NCAA East Regional, Witmyer claimed 10th in the high jump. In the RMU outdoor track & field record book, Witmyer owns seven of the top 10 distances in school history, including the school record of 7'0.50" he established as a sophomore in 2006. He also owns four of the top six marks in the event for indoor track & field, with his best mark of 6'11.50" coming on two occasions. That leap is tied for second all time. Away from competition, Witmyer was a two-time District II Academic All-American according to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), earning the honor in both 2007 and 2008. In addition, Witmyer was selected as the NEC Scholar-Athlete of Year for indoor track & field in both 2007 and 2008 and was tabbed the 2008 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for outdoor track & field.
