Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Atlantic Hockey Conference
announced Tuesday that
Robert Morris University sophomore
Dalton Izyk is its
Travel Team USA Goalie of the Week for Jan. 5-11.
Izyk, a native of Oswego, N.Y., stopped 34 shots last Friday as the then-No. 20 Colonials downed Bentley 3-0 at 84 Lumber Arena. It was Izyk's third shutout of the season, boosting his save percentage to .928 and dropping his goals-against average to 2.59. Robert Morris is now 7-3-1 in games Izyk starts this season.
The shutout was even more impressive considering that Bentley entered last weekend with the No. 2 scoring offense in Atlantic Hockey and the 11th-most potent attack in Division I (3.26 goals per game). The visiting Falcons had not been blanked all season, but Izyk and the Colonials pulled it off to start the two-game series on a positive note.
Perhaps Izyk's most important stop came midway through the third period, when he denied AHC leading scorer Andrew Gladiuk on a point-blank chance with the game tied. Moments later, the Colonials broke through for three goals in five minutes to take the victory.
This is Izyk's third Goalie of the Week honor of his sophomore year. He also won it twice in October on his way to collecting Atlantic Hockey's Goalie of the Month prize. Izyk stopped 97 of the first 98 shots he faced this season, including a pair of shutouts.
Overall, the first-place Colonials (13-5-4, 10-3-3 AHC) have claimed 10 weekly honors this season, with goalies Izyk (three) and
Terry Shafer (two) combining to earn half of those.
RMU concludes a five-game homestand this weekend, when league foe American International pays a visit to the Island Sports Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with the latter game doubling as Military Appreciation Night. Admission is free for active and retired military personnel, and the Colonials will sport special camouflage jerseys in support of the
It's About The Warrior (IATW) Foundation.
