Dana Davis Earns Second Rookie of Week Prize

Moon Township, Pa. Robert Morris University freshman midfielder Dana Davis continues her dynamic transition to college lacrosse, as she earned her second Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week award Monday afternoon.

Davis received her second NEC honor in three weeks for her well-rounded performance March 2 at Delaware State. The native of Garnet Valley, Pa., led the Colonials with four ground-ball recoveries and three caused turnovers in a 20-5 victory over the Hornets. Davis also chipped a goal, an assist and a pair of draw controls, helping RMU draw ace Jessica Karwacki claim possession.

Davis followed that up with another big game Monday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium, a 14-12 win over Detroit that extended the Colonials' winning streak to four. She netted her first NCAA hat trick and contributed eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, both team highs. Her four draw controls established a new career best as well.

"Where Dana shines is in all the little stuff," said head coach Katy Phillips after Monday's game. "She's the one who's causing turnovers, getting the ground balls and muscling in on the draws."

Davis has nine goals and three assists in her first five RMU games, ranking sixth on the team with 12 total points. She leads the 4-1 Colonials in ground balls (16) and caused turnovers (eight), while also piling up nine draw controls and a 5-for-7 conversion rate on free-position attempts.

A first-team all-American as a senior at Garnet Valley High School, the 5-foot-4 Davis won three Pennsylvania state championships during her prep career. She fit right in with the Colonials during the fall exhibition season, but she's taken it to a new level this spring.

"Fall was a little rough with all the schoolwork, but once I got used to balancing that with lacrosse, it's been going really well," Davis said. "The rest of the team has been really helpful, too. It's been awesome and I love being here."

In addition to her impressive on-field credentials, Davis was an academic all-American during her final two years at Garnet Valley, located in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania. She also competed for the Brandywine Majors club program, an experience that prepared her to take the next step in her lacrosse career.

"Everyone works really hard at this level," she said. "It's more fast-paced (than high school). I like it so much more."

Davis and the Colonials take the field next on Friday at Oregon. RMU's next home game is Sunday, March 29 against Campbell.
