RMU Completes New York Sweep at St. Bonaventure

Yoviene and Corey Karwacki score three goals each as Colonials improve to 4-1 on the road

Allegany, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team will have to navigate a pair of two-game road trips as part of its upcoming Northeast Conference schedule, so the Colonials looked at this weekend in western New York as a rehearsal of sorts.

RMU can consider the dry run a success, as it completed a two-game road sweep with a 17-10 triumph Sunday afternoon at St. Bonaventure, improving to 4-1 as the visiting team.

The Colonials, who also won Friday at Niagara, are now 6-2 on the season with one game to go before starting NEC play April 3 against Saint Francis.

"The team battled hard this weekend and battled through both games," said RMU head coach Katy Phillips. "Our goal was to use this weekend to prepare."

Robert Morris leading scorer Kristin Yoviene netted five points (3g, 2a) on the snowy afternoon; the senior midfielder has registered multiple points in all eight games and paces the team in goals (19) and assists (18). Junior Corey Karwacki now has 18 goals on the year after her hat trick against the Bonnies, while fellow midfielders Dana Davis (2g, 1a) and Brittany Byerly (2g, 1a) checked in with three-point days of their own.

"We need to continue to play fast on both ends of the field and keep our offense balanced," Phillips said.

The Colonials came into the game ranked third in Division I in goals per game (15.7), and they delivered another potent offensive performance, starting with an 8-4 advantage in the first half. After St. Bonaventure (1-7) climbed within 8-6 early in the second, RMU filled the net with seven out of the next eight goals to seal its second win in three days. Junior Emily Jamison scored the first two goals of that surge, with Yoviene burying three straight later in the sequence.

RMU caused 13 of St. Bonaventure's 21 turnovers, with junior transfer Amanda Harrington forcing a team-high three. Senior defenders Kristi Marks (five) and Haley Schemm (four) combined to pick up nine ground balls; the freshman Davis nabbed three, as did Byerly and sophomore Megan Wolfgang.

"We had a lot of turnover opportunities on defense," said junior midfielder Jessica Karwacki, who added seven draw controls to her NCAA-best total of 109. "We capitalized on those turnovers with fast breaks."

Karwacki also scored the game's first goal and fired seven shots. She reflected on Friday's overwhelming performance at Niagara, during which she had 20 draw controls to take the all-time career NCAA record away from former Northwestern standout Alyssa Leonard.

"It felt amazing," said Karwacki, now the owner of 477 draw controls in 41 games for RMU. "I'm thrilled to share the excitement with a great team and great supporters. It was something I came into college motivated to accomplish."

Sophomore goalie Hallie Yancey (three saves) protected the Colonials' net in the first half, earning her second career win before freshman Mackenzie Duffy (six) came on for the final 30 minutes of action. Katie Breeze, Emma Baukhages, Stefany Gale and Jessica Rutherford also scored for RMU.

The Colonials conclude their non-conference schedule when they host Campbell on Sunday, March 29. First draw at Joe Walton Stadium is set for noon.
