Smithfield, R.I. – Four days after clinching its second consecutive postseason berth, the
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team had five players earn all-league honors during Thursday's Northeast Conference pre-tournament banquet at Bryant University.
The Colonials were well-represented on the all-NEC first team, as senior defender
Kristi Marks and junior midfielder
Jessica Karwacki were voted onto the top squad by league coaches. A trio of midfielders rounded out RMU's five honorees on the evening, as senior
Kristin Yoviene and junior
Corey Karwacki made the all-NEC second team, while freshman
Dana Davis was elected to the all-rookie squad.
This is the second time in program history that RMU had five players recognized at the NEC postseason banquet; the Colonials previously accomplished the feat in 2010. Also, this is the third season that Robert Morris has placed multiple players on the all-conference first team, with 2009 (two) and 2011 (three) also standing out in that regard.
Jessica Karwacki joined Colleen O'Donnell (2011, 2012) as the only Colonials ever to make the all-NEC first team twice. Karwacki, a native of Sparks, Maryland, is on pace to lead all of NCAA Division I in draw controls for the second consecutive season, with 164 through 16 games.
In addition to being the all-time NCAA career leader in controlling draws, Karwacki contributed 10 goals and 12 total points this season, along with 15 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
Marks, a team co-captain from Apex, North Carolina, bumped up from all-NEC second team accolades last spring. She ranks second on RMU in ground balls (33) and caused turnovers (17) while holding down a leadership role for the Colonials' defense. Marks started every game this season, marking the third consecutive year that she did so.
Yoviene repeated as a second-team honoree, pacing an RMU attack that has been in the national top 10 all year in terms of goals per game. Her 66 points (39g, 27a) have already established a new program record for a single season, surpassing Ashley Levering's 63-point output in 2009.
Furthermore, the product of Easton, Maryland, has scored in every game this year, starting with a program-record-tying 10 points against Duquesne on Feb. 18. Yoviene, who was named NEC offensive player of the week twice earlier this season, has risen to second place in RMU history with 169 career points on 115 goals and 54 assists.
Corey Karwacki, Jessica's twin sister, has been a potent running-mate for Yoviene this season, netting 58 points on 37 goals and 21 assists. She has put up seven games of five points or more this season, writing her name on the scoresheet in 14 of RMU's 16 contests to date.
Karwacki's 58-point season is the third-best all-time by a Colonial, behind only Yoviene and Levering. She is also fourth on this year's Colonials in ground balls (25) and fifth in caused turnovers (13).
Davis rounds out the group of honorees, taking home a spot on the six-player all-rookie squad after a remarkable freshman year out of Garnet Valley High School in southeastern Pennsylvania.
The midfielder won NEC rookie of the week four times in five weeks earlier this season, establishing herself as a player to watch. Davis leads Robert Morris with 41 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers, to go with her 27 draw controls. She has chimed in often on the attack, too, netting 22 goals and 11 assists in her first NCAA season.
RMU has had at least one NEC first-team selection for five consecutive years, while Davis' recognition makes it six Colonials over the past six seasons that have made the all-rookie squad. Current junior
Brittany Byerly made both of those lists as a freshman in 2013.
Byerly was a notable omission from the all-NEC teams, as she has become just the sixth Colonial ever to reach 50 points in a season. Her 35 goals rank sixth in the NEC, and the native of Wexford, Pennsylvania, is eighth in the conference in points.
