Jessica Guyett of the
Robert Morris University track & field team claimed gold in the shot put Saturday in day one of the 2016 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in New Britain, Conn., on the campus of Central Connecticut State.
In earning All-NEC First Team accolades, Guyett posted a toss of 13.55 meters to claim the individual title. She finished ahead of Zhane Stones of Wagner, who earned silver with a toss of 13.45 meters. Guyett's performance is also good enough to crack the top 10 in school history in the event, ranking seventh.
The RMU 4x800-meter relay squad established a new school record at the NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday, finishing with a time of 9:20.79 to claim silver. The team, which earns All-NEC Second Team honors, consisted of juniors
Amanda Choma and
Kiera Mooney, freshman
Mathilde Terleth and sophomore
Rachel Crane.
Mooney and Crane were part of the previous 4x800-meter relay squad that previously owned the school mark of 9:22.83, which was set last year at William & Mary.
The performances of Guyett and the 4x800-meter relay squad helped bolster the Colonials to second place after the first day of competition at the 2016 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 35 points. Sacred Heart sits in first place with 81 points.
In other field action for Robert Morris Saturday, junior
Danielle Carmen garnered bronze in the high jump thanks to a leap of 1.58 meters, a personal record. Freshman
Sam Buck finished fifth in the hammer throw (46.51 meters), while junior
April Krivoniak claimed fifth in the shot put (13.02 meters). Junior
Tanel Lewis, meanwhile, scored in the long jump for the Colonials, placing sixth thanks to a leap of 5.16 meters.
In the track events, Crane qualified for the finals Sunday in the 800-meter by finishing fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:21.90. Terleth also finished fifth in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.66 to qualify for the finals Sunday.
The 2016 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude Sunday. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. with the javelin, followed by the triple jump at 9:30 a.m.
