RMU Men’s Hockey Defeats Air Force 6-3 as Schooley Earns 300th Career Win

Garvey, Reineke and Taylor each produce multipoint efforts; Babcock nets first career goal

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – A dominant four-goal second period powered RMU to a 6-3 victory at Air Force on Saturday night, securing Head Coach Derek Schooley's 300th career win with the program. The Colonials improve to 4-10-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
RMU struck first as freshman John Babcock buried his first career goal, set up by captains Cameron Garvey and Tanner Klimpke.
 
The Colonials controlled the pace early and outshot the Falcons 11-4 through the first 20 minutes.
 
SECOND PERIOD
Air Force responded quickly as Chris Hedden scored for the second straight night, followed by a goal from Cole Christian to give the Falcons their first lead.
 
RMU answered with a surge, scoring four unanswered goals to reclaim control.
 
Garvey tied the game on a breakaway after a stretch pass from Ryan Taylor. On the power play, Jackson Reineke netted his first of the night off assists from Bruce McDonald and Michael Craig, then added a second goal minutes later to extend the lead.
 
With under a minute remaining, Taylor snapped home a transition marker, pushing RMU's advantage to 5-2 heading into the intermission.
 
THIRD PERIOD
The Falcons pushed late, pulling within two midway through the frame. With their netminder pulled in the final minutes, Air Force pressed again, but RMU sealed the result with an empty-net tally from Braden Rourke, assisted by Trent Wilson.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot Air Force 38-35. Garvey and Luke van Why led the team with five shots each, while Garvey won a team-high 11 faceoffs.
  • Taylor, Wilson, Julian Beaumont and J.R. Ashmead all recorded a +2 rating.
  • Defensemen Michael Craig and John Babcock each logged three blocked shots.
  • The Colonials went 1-for-3 on the power play, courtesy of Reineke's first goal.
  • Freshman goaltender Charlie Schenkel made 32 saves for his fourth career win—also his fourth career 30+ save performance.
 
MULTIPOINT EFFORTS
Reineke recorded the second two-goal game of his career and his seventh multipoint outing.
 
Junior captain Cameron Garvey posted a goal and an assist, bringing his career totals to 23 goals, 23 assists and 46 points. It marked his eighth career multipoint game.
 
Senior Ryan Taylor tallied a goal and an assist as well, reaching 25 goals, 30 assists and 55 career points. His performance also marked the eighth multipoint effort of his career.
 
POINT STREAK
Craig extended his point streak to four games entering the winter break, producing two goals and three assists in that span. The St. Catharines, Ontario native now holds eight goals, 34 assists and 42 points in his career.
 
COLONIAL FIRST
Freshman blue liner John Babcock netted his first career goal against the Falcons. The North Vancouver, B.C. native has produced three assists and leads the team in blocks with 30.
 
MILESTONE REACHED
With Saturday's victory, Head Coach Derek Schooley officially earned his 300th career win. The program's founding bench boss, Schooley has guided RMU since its inaugural 2004-05 season, with 206 of his victories coming in conference play.
 
UP NEXT
Following a three-week break, RMU returns to action with a home-and-home matchup against Sacred Heart. The Pioneers host the Colonials on Tuesday, December 30 at 4:00 PM before the series shifts to Neville Island on Saturday, January 3 at 4:00 PM. The home contest will air on SportsNet Pittsburgh and FloHockey.
