Selected as the Giant Eagle RMU Female Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 25, 2017, is sophomore defender Kirsten Welsh of the ice hockey squad. In a 1-0-1 weekend at Mercyhurst that helped keep the Colonials atop the College Hockey America (CHA) standings, Welsh finished with a goal and three assists. In a 2-1 victory over the Lakers to open the series, Welsh opened the scoring at the 12:00 minute mark of the third period by finding the back of the net to give Robert Morris a 1-0 lead. The next day in a 3-3 tie, Welsh assisted on each of RMU’s goals. In 24 games in 2016-17, Welsh, a native of Blackstock, Ontario, owns nine goals and eight assists for 17 points. She is tied for fourth on the team in scoring with Maggie Lague.
