Named the Peoples Natural Gas RMU Male Student-Athlete of the Week for March 27, 2019, is senior guard Matty McConnell of the men’s basketball team. In two games of the 2019 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), McConnell averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals in helping the Colonials advance to the second round. In a 98-89 overtime win over Cornell (3/19/19) at the North Athletic Complex in the first round of the 2019 CIT, McConnell contributed a career-high 27 points while also registering seven rebounds and three steals. He knocked down a trio of three-pointers in consecutive possessions in the extra frame to bolster Robert Morris. McConnell, a native of Oakdale, Pa., also finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals against Presbyterian (3/24/19) in the second round of the 2019 CIT at the North Athletic Complex. Thanks to five three-pointers against the Big Red in the first round of the 2019 CIT, McConnell joined former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) as the only student-athletes in program history to eclipse career totals of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, 200 steals and 200 three-pointers. McConnell concluded his career ranked 18th all-time in program history with 1,156 points and also compiled career totals of 520 rebounds, 304 assists, 241 steals and 202 triples.
