Selected as the Chick-Fil-A Robinson RMU Female Student-Athlete of the Week as March goes out like a lion is senior Yessie Valencia of the track & field team. She shares the honor with graduate student Natalie Higgins of the softball squad. At the Carnegie Mellon Invitational (3/27) to open the 2021 outdoor season for the Colonials, Valencia won the individual championship in the discus and also earned silver in the hammer throw. In the discus, Valencia recorded a distance of 47.67 meters (156’5”), which in addition to establishing a personal record also set a new Gesling Stadium record. The old mark of 47.55 meters, held by Melissa Stewart, was originally set in 2005. Valencia also posted a distance of 50.51 meters (165’8”) in the hammer throw to finish second and trail only her teammate, junior Keturah Hunter. Valencia is a native of Phoenix, Ariz., and an organizational leadership major.
