A member of the Robert Morris University volleyball coaching staff since 2011, assistant coach Danny Doherty is now in his third season with the Colonials.  Serving as a volunteer-assistant coach his first two seasons at Robert Morris, the 2013 campaign will be his first as the assistant coach for the Colonials.

In his first two season with RMU, Doherty was a vital member of the Colonials' new blocking scheme implemented by head coach Dale Starr.  Doherty primarily works with the middle blockers and helped to guide Becky Jay to the single-season program record with 134 block assists while putting up the third most total blocks in a season with 148.

Doherty brings playing and coaching experience to the Colonials from his alma mater, Kent State University.  Prior to joining RMU, Doherty was a student-assistant coach with the Golden Flashes.

Kent State got off to its second-best start in program history in 2008, winning 10 of its first 13 matches, and won three tournament championships during the season, the Colgate Classic, the Maine Tournament and the Air Force Academy Tournament. The Golden Flashes used a strong finish the following season to finish third in the Mid-American Conference East Division, earning the right to host a MAC Tournament First Round match, and also claimed two more tournament championships. In Doherty's final season with the team, Kent State again finished third in the MAC East Division, aided by season sweeps of three divisional opponents. The Golden Flashes earned five All-MAC selections in Doherty's three seasons with the program.

Doherty competed for Kent State's men's club team as a middle blocker and outside hitter from 2006 to 2010. In addition, for three seasons of his playing career, Doherty gained further experience by pulling double duty as his team's head coach.

Doherty also has familiarity with non-collegiate programs as well. He served as a head coach with Ohio Extreme Volleyball Club for two years. He was a head coach with the American - 16's team and led the squad to a fifth-place finish in the region. Doherty also has worked with OhioVarsity.com as a satellite camps coordinator.

Since moving to Pittsburgh and joining the Robert Morris staff, Doherty has also contributed in various roles to the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Club.  In 2012, Doherty coached the 18's Premier Platinum team to their first Junior National Tournament in over ten years.

Doherty graduated from Kent State in 2010 with a degree in interpersonal communication.
