Box Score Huntington, W. Va. - With a, 74-73, victory over Kent State, Friday, Nov. 17, the
Robert Morris University women's basketball team defeated a Mid-American Conference opponent in its second straight game. With the victory the Colonials improve to 2-0 overall.
The Golden Flashes jumped out to a, 3-0, lead after a Kristin Peoples three pointer just 17 seconds into the game. RMU quickly answered back, taking a 4-3 lead, after a Natasha Summerville (Arlington, Texas / Frank Phillips C.C.) jumper and a Chinata Nesbit (Washington D.C. / Chipola J.C.) lay-up.
Kent State took its biggest lead of the half, six points, by going on a 7-0 run capped off by a Sarah Burgess lay-up. The Colonials found themselves done by five with 13:45 remaining in the half, when Summerville hit two of her four three-pointers with a Psyche Butler (Fort Worth, Texas / New Mexico J.C.) lay-up in between to take a 21-19 lead.
The two teams would battle back and fourth with no one taking any more than a two point lead, until Summerville gave RMU a four point lead at the 2:40 mark of the first half. After two Kent State free throws and a Butler lay-up, Peoples knocked down a jumper with six seconds left in the half, making the score 40-38 RMU at the half.
The Colonials outscored the Golden Flashes 11-5 in the first 4:30 of the second half taking an eight point, 51-43 lead. Senior Princess Asia Alston (Lowell, Mass. / Butler C.C.) ended the run with a lay-up at the 15:30 mark.
The game went south quickly for RMU after that Alston lay-up as Kent State outscored RMU 8-3 to take a one point edge with 10:10 remaining in the half and would not allow the Colonials to lead again until the final minutes of the game. Kent State's largest lead came with 9:04 left in the half, when Burgess hit a three-pointer making the score 61-54.
Senior Sugeiry Monsac (Villa Maria, Dom. Rep. / Arizona Western J.C.) made a three-pointer at the 6:50 mark with only two seconds remaining on the shot clock pulling RMU to within one point. Monsac's three-pointer changed the momentum of the game allowing the Colonials to score the last five points of the game, including the game winning basket by Monsac with 2:00 left in the game.
Burgess led the way for Kent State with 19 points, while Tiffany LaFleur tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. For the game RMU shot 43.1 % from the field including 50% in the first half. Kent State shot 46.2% from the field including 51.7% in the second half. RMU also shot 55.6% from beyond the arc and 61.3% from the charity stripe. Kent State shot 60% from the free-throw line and a poor 28.6% from beyond the arc.
The Colonials return to action, Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 when they face tournament host Marshall in the championship game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
