Coleman Notches Victory No. 400 as Softball Sweeps Akron

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University softball team got back to action Wednesday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Akron, garnering a 3-2 win in game one before posting a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The pair of victories improves the Colonials to 11-15 overall on the 2007 campaign. Thanks to RMU's game one victory over the Zips, 17th-year head coach Craig Coleman notched his 400th career win, and his overall record now stands at 401-364-4 (.524).

In game one Robert Morris jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when junior Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) hit a solo home run to left field off of Lindsay Bodeker. Akron came back to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of fourth when Kelsie Hanson hit into a fielder's choice, driving home Jaclyn Spirtos with the tying run.

RMU upped its lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) scored on an error by the first baseman, but the Zips came right back to tie the score, 2-2, in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI groundout by Deanna McCauley. The Colonials were able to clinch the win in the bottom of the frame when junior Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) hit a one-out, pinch hit home run. Perich finished 3-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI for Robert Morris, while senior Danielle Cohen (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) notched the victory from the pitcher's circle with a complete-game win. She allowed two earned runs on five hits, striking out six and walking a pair.

In game two RMU never trailed, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Panepinto and senior Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, Pa. / North Allegheny). The Colonials stretched their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) provided an RBI double to right field that scored Reed.

Reed allowed a run in the top of the fifth inning as Lisa McLean scored on a wild pitch, but Robert Morris rebounded to score two more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Perich provided an RBI double during the inning, while sophomore Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) stole home. RMU tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1, but Akron loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Julie Boyles provided an RBI single to pull the Zips within 6-2, and Krista Hansen's slap single to the pitcher scored another run to make it 6-3. However, Reed struck out Jaclyn Brindus to preserve the win.

Reed scattered 11 hits in the complete game victory, striking out six and walking four. Panepinto was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish for the Colonials, scoring a pair of runs while driving in one. Lynch finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for RMU as the club posted 10 hits in the nightcap.

Robert Morris returns to Northeast Conference action with a pair of doubleheaders on the road this weekend. The Colonials visit Quinnipiac Saturday, April 21, for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader before traveling to Central Connecticut State Sunday, April 22, for a double dip that starts at noon.
