Softball Takes Second Game of Double Header From Central Conn. State

New Britain, Conn. - For the second straight day, the Robert Morris University softball team lost game one of their double header, 4-3, while winning game two 4-2 over Central Conn. State. The split moved RMU's record to 13-17 on the season and to 6-6 in the NEC, while the Blue Devils are now 11-25 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

 

RMU opened the scoring in the second inning with a lead off home run, her fourth of the season. The Colonials took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Jenna Pennesi (Latrobe, Pa. / Latrobe) scored while Jill Spargo (Warren, Pa. / Warren) stole second. The Colonials then went up 3-0 in the fourth inning off a Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) double, scoring Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, Pa. / North Allegheny).

 

The Blue Devils would tie the game scoring three runs in two innings, begining with the bottom of the fourth inning. Tracy Guerra drove in Pam Shifrin with a double. CCSU's Sara Budrick tied the game with a two run single, scoring Jenna Earley and Karen Costes.

 

The game would head to extra innings and in the ninth inning, Budrick hit a game winning double, scoring Rachel Brenneman giving CCSU a 4-3 victory. Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) took the loss for RMU, pitching 3.2 innings, while allowing one run on four hits. Danielle Cohen (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) started the game for RMU, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.

 

RMU started game two off hot scoring two runs in the first inning, with a Dorsch single scoring Spargo and then Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) grounded out to second base, but Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) scored giving the Colonials a 2-0 lead.

 

CCSU picked up a run in the fourth inning with a Alison Rossi home run, making the score 2-1 through four innings.

 

The Colonials picked up the game winning run in the fifth inning, with a Dorsch single, scoring Spargo. They would add an insurance run in the seventh, when Smith singled in Spargo.

 

Reed picked up the victory in game two, picthing seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits. She also struck out four batters.

 

The Colonials return home to Moon Township, Pa., next Saturday when they play host to Long Island on April 28. Game one of the double header begins at 1:00 p.m.
