West Long Branch, N.J. - The Robert Morris University softball team dropped a pair of games to Monmouth Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 and 10-9. With the defeats, RMU fell to 9-13 overall and to 4-4 in Northeast Conference games. Monmouth improved to 19-8 on the season and to 7-1 in the NEC.
RMU did not manage much offense in game one of the day, recording only four hits with two of those coming from senior catcher Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, Pa. / North Allegheny). Dorsch finished game one going 2-for-3, while senior Jill Spargo (Warren, Pa. / Warren) drove in the only colonial run by driving in Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville).
The Colonials bats came alive in game two scoring nine runs, but Breena Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) and Stacy Davidson (Akron, Ohio / Springfield) combined to allow 10 runs on 17 hits. Spargo went 3-for-5 scoring one run and driving in one run. Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Ashlee Smith (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) tallied three RBI.
Reed picthed a complete game in game one, allowing three runs on five hits. She struck out two batters each in game one and two. Reed was also credited with the loss in both games, dropping her record 6-5 on the season.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Canisius in out of conference action. Game one of the double header is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
