Robert Morris University softball team closed out the season with a sweep of Northeast Conference rival Saint Francis-Pa. (17-33 / 3-13 NEC). RMU defeated Saint Francis, 3-0, in game one of the day, before out slugging them, 12-9, in game two.
Pitcher Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) faced three batters over the minimum in game one, allowing only three hits to 24 batters. She also struck out five batters, recording the complete game shutout. All of RMU's offense came in the fifth inning, when Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) smacked a two out double to left field. Reed followed that up with a double of her own, scoring Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Immaculate Heart) who pinch ran for Kline. Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) hit a third straight double for RMU, scoring Reed, giving the Colonials a 2-0 lead. Jill Spargo (Warren, Pa. / Warren) capped off the inning with a single up the middle scoring McDaniel, giving RMU its third run and allowing them to cruise to a 3-0 victory in game one.
Kline led the Colonial offense in game two with two home runs and six RBI, she also scored two runs and went 3-for-4.
RMU scored early and often, putting up five runs in the first inning. Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) got things starting with a single up the middle. Perich advanced to third after a Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) double to left center. Both Perich and Panepinto scored when Ashlee Smith (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) singled up the middle, giving RMU a 2-0 lead. After a Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, Pa. / North Allegheny) single, Kline cleared the bases with a three run shot to left center field, giving RMU a 5-0 lead through their half of the first inning.
Saint Francis scored five runs over the next two innings, tying the game at five, but the Colonials to the led back shortly in the third inning, after a Panepinto double and a Kline RBI single up the middle.
Trailing by two runs, heading into the sixth inning, the Colonials scored three runs by way of a Panepinto double, scoring Perich and a Smith two-run home run. RMU however would allow Saint Francis two score the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning. After neither team scored in the seventh the game headed to extra innings.
RMU scored three runs in the top of the eight inning. The first run came from a Dorsch single, scoring Perich. The next batter, Kline, it her second home run of the game, and fifth of the season, giving the Colonials a, 12-9, lead. Reed shut down Saint Francis in the bottom of the eight inning giving RMU the victory.
The Colonials finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 18-22 and a record of 9-9 in the Northeast Conference.
