Volleyball Splits a Pair of Matches

Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University volleyball team capped off the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational Saturday evening by defeating Youngstown State, 3-1, before falling to North Dakota State, 3-2 at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials close out the tournament with an overall record of 3-3.

 

The Colonials knocked off the Penguins with two straight victories in games 3-and-4 after splitting the first two- games. Senior Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) lead RMU with 20 kills and finished off her double-double with 13 digs. Senior Jennifer Stambaugh (Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) tallied 17 kills and six digs, while freshman Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) recorded 14 kills and junior Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) totaled 12 kills.

 

Senior all-tournament selection Tawnya Storino (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) recorded a match high 57 assists, along with nine digs, one service ace and one block assist. Junior Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) tallied a match high 27 digs and one kill.

 

The evening game for the Colonials saw them jump to a 2-1 match lead before dropping the final two games, 30-22 and 15-8, to give North Dakota State the victory.

 

Wolthuis again tallied a double-double with a team high 18 kills to go along with 17 digs. Graham tallied a career high 17 kills in just the second week of her collegiate career, while Lee also hit double-digits in kills with 10.

 

Storino tallied 55 assists, while Gibson led the team with 26 digs.

 

The Colonials are next in action, Sept. 7 when they travel to the University of California-Riverside. RMU will take on Army and host UC-Riverside in the first day of the tournament.
