Volleyball Defeats Army Before Falling to UC-Riverside

Riverside, Calif. ? The Robert Morris University volleyball team opened the UC-Riverside Classic by defeating Army in five games, 3-2 (20-30, 30-19, 19-30, 30-26, 17-15), before falling to host UC-Riverside, 3-1 (26-30, 30-28, 21-30, 15-30). After the pair of games, the Colonials record now stands at 4-4 on the season.

 

In game one of the day, RMU found itself in a, 2-1, deficit before bouncing back to win the final two-games to defeat Army. For the match, seniors Tawnya Storino (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) both tallied double-doubles. Storino recorded 42 assists and 11 digs, along with four kills, two service aces and two block assists. Wolthuis finished with a match high 20 kills and 10 digs, along with one service ace and one assist.

 

Also tallying double digit kills was junior Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) and senior Jennifer Stambaugh (Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key). Lee totaled 14 kills, while Stambaugh recorded 12 kills. Leading the team in digs was junior Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris). Gibson totaled 12 digs along with one service ace.

 

In game-two, the Colonials fell behind, 1-0, after game-one. RMU evened things up in game-two before dropping the next two matches giving UC-Riverside the victory.

 

Storino and Wolthuis both tallied double-doubles in game-two. Storino finished with a team high 47 assists and 11 digs, while Wolthuis tallied 11 kills and 14 digs.

 

Freshman Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) tallied a match high 14 kills, along with three total blocks and three digs. Lee (12) and Stambaugh (10) also tallied double-digit kills for RMU. Lee also recorded two digs, two block assists, two assists and one service ace, while Stambaugh finished with six digs and three block assists.  

 

The Colonials return to action tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 8 when they close out the UC-Riverside Classic against Idaho State at 4:00 p.m.
