Box Score Moon Township, Pa. ? Oct. 11, 2008 ? In a hard fought match, the Robert Morris Colonials fell to Wright State, 3-1 at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Senior libero Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) captured a season high 35 digs to become the all-time career dig leader at Robert Morris with 1,737 career digs.
The Raiders started off the match with the 1-0 lead after defeating the Colonials 25-16 in set one. Both teams made impressive defensive plays, but Wright State tallied 11 kills to the Colonials nine giving them the advantage.
In a tightly contested second set, Robert Morris boosted their kill total to 12 after earning only eight put downs in the first set. However, Wright State also continued to improve on the attack adding 15 kills to their collection. Robert Morris was up by three towards the end of the set, but a few errors by Robert Morris put the Raiders back into the set, edging past the Colonials 26-24.
In the third set, the Colonial offense got even better, with the team earning 17 kills and only three errors. Lee led the way with five kills in set three alone, while senior outside hitters Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) and Jessy Nelko (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) added four apiece. The offensive spurt gave the Colonials the 25-21 win to force a set four.
Despite a solid effort by the entire Colonial squad, the Raiders were able to overpower Robert Morris in the fourth to win 25-17 and end the match.
Senior Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) led all hitters with 13 kills and earned her first double-double of the season with 18 digs. Freshman setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) grabbed her eighth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 11 digs to go along with eight kills. Lee and Wolthuis joined the duo of Gibson and Bennett with double-digit digs, earning 18 and 14, respectively.
In part of homecoming festivities, the Colonials will return to the Charles L. Sewall Center tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to take on the Robert Morris volleyball alumnae in the first annual Robert Morris alumnae match.
The Colonials return to regular competition on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they take on conference foe Saint Francis (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m.
