Box Score Moon Township, Pa. ? Oct. 8, 2008 ? The Robert Morris University Colonials faced their fifth five-set match of the season and fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown at the WVU Coliseum. The Colonials are now 2-3 on the season when playing to five sets.
Robert Morris started off with a struggle, as they fell to the Mountaineers 25-7 in the first set. In a complete reversal of set one, the Colonials bounced back in set two and stunned WVU with a 25-11 victory. Freshman setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) dominated the set with a serving streak that included four service aces.
The Colonials entered set three with the advantage as senior opposite Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) started the set with a kill to get the early lead. West Virginia quickly recovered and ended up winning set three 25-16.
Set four proved to be the most exciting of the five-set match as the two teams battled back and forth through some long rallies. Robert Morris led for the majority of the set, but the Mountaineers start to gain an edge at 23-20 in favor of the Colonials. However, Robert Morris remained composed and a couple clutch kills by freshman Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) gave the Colonials the 25-21 win to force the fifth set.
Both teams fought very hard for the win, with the set staying relatively close for the entire set. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were able to slide past the Colonials in the end and won 15-11 for the match win.
Veith led the team in kills, blocks and hitting percentage with 10, five and a .381 average, respectively and earned her fourth double-digit kill match of the season. Lee finished the match just shy of double-digit kills with nine, while also adding seven digs and three blocks.
Bennett led the match in service aces with six, while also adding a double-double of 11 digs and 29 assists. Also adding double-digit digs were seniors Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) with 14 and Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) with 10.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 at home against Wright State and will then take part in an alumnae match on Sunday, Oct. 12.
