Box Score Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University Colonials finished the 2008 regular season with an unblemished 8-0 NEC record on Sunday afternoon. The squad swept the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 3-0 at the Charles L. Sewall Center and clinched the NEC Regular-Season Title in yesterday's match against Quinnipiac. The Colonials were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian), who posted her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 14 digs.
The Colonials entered the match strong from the very beginning, topping CCSU 25-21 in the first set. Wolthuis fired things up for Robert Morris, as she tallied the squad's first kill of the match with a hard shot straight down the line. Wolthuis and sophomore outside hitter Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) each posted a pair of five kills in the first set.
Robert Morris continued to have the upper hand in the second set, as they downed CCSU 25-18. The Blue Devils never let up, but the Colonial defense was too strong and was able to dig up most of their attacks. At the end of the set Robert Morris posted 13 kills to CCSU's eight and held them to a .000 average.
The Blue Devils started to rally their way back into the match in the second set, as they led for a good portion of the start of the set. However, Robert Morris was able surge past CCSU late in the set to grab the 25-21 win for the match triumph. Senior opposite Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) finalized the win with a kill that found its way through the CCSU blockers.
Drabant and freshman setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) joined Wolthuis with double-doubles, as Drabant notched 10 kills and 11 digs and Bennett finished the match with 38 assists and 18 digs. Bennett also tallied a team high 5 blocks to go along with five kills.
Senior libero Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) finished with a match high 21 digs and Lee captured a match high hitting percentage of .500, earning eight kills on 14 attempts with only one error. Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) recorded a team high three service aces to go along with four blocks and three kills, while freshman Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) grabbed five kills and three blocks in the win.
With the NEC Regular-Season Title in hand, the Colonials return back to the Charles L. Sewall Center next week to host the 2008 NEC Tournament. Robert Morris will face the winner of the first round match featuring No. 4 Saint Francis (Pa.) and No. 5 Fairleigh Dickinson at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22.
