Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University softball team fell to 1-3 on the young season Saturday afternoon after losing to Villanova, 3-1, and Rutgers, 11-3, on the final day of the Hokies United Memorial Tournament.
Sophomore Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) scored the only Colonial run against Villanova with a home run in the fifth inning tying the game at one. Villanova tacked on three more runs however in the sixth inning giving them a 3-1 lead. RMU threatened in its half of the seventh with two outs when Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) and Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) tallied back-to-back singles, bringing Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) to the plate with two on and two outs. Panepinto was unable to drive home either run as she struck out ending the game. Reed took the loss pitching all six innings, striking out six batters.
The Colonials were matched up against Big East opponent Rutgers in their second game of the afternoon. After falling behind, 1-0, in the top of the second Lynch lead off the bottom of the second with her second home run of the season tying the game at one. Trailing, 10-1, in the fourth, RMU's Panepinto picked up her first home run of the season, after Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, De. / St. Marks) lead of the inning with a walk, making the score, 10-3. Rutgers added one more in the fifth making the final score, 11-3. Lindsey Moates (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) took the loss, pitching thee and one third innings allowing six runs on nine hits.
RMU returns to action on March 10 as they begin play in Orlando, Fla. at the Orlando Rebel Games. The Colonials take on Cleveland State and Butler on the opening day of action.
