Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University softball team dropped a pair of games to Canisius Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Colonials fall to 9-11 on the season while the Golden Griffins improve to 12-9 on the season.
Canisius took a, 5-0, lead in the top of the fifth inning in game one. Three of those runs came off of a Jenny Maheu home run. The Colonials got on the board in the fifth and sixth innings with a pair of home runs. Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) hit her first career home run, a solo shot, making the score, 5-1. Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) added another solo home run in the sixth pulling Robert Morris to within three runs. Canisius added another run in the seventh giving them a 6-2 victory.
Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits while striking out three batters.
The Colonials continued their slow start into game two, falling behind, 6-0, in the fourth inning before getting on the board. Robert Morris got things going with a five run fourth inning. Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, De. / St. Marks) opened the inning with a walk followed by back-to-back singles to right field by both Stacy Davidson (Akron, Ohio / Springfield) and McDaniel loading the bases. Calderone scored on a wild pitch, Reed walked two batters later reloading the bases. Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) and Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) followed with back-to-back RBI singles making the score 6-3. Canisius would walk in two more Colonial runs making the score, 6-5, at the innings end.
With the Colonials back in the ball game, Canisius added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth making the score, 8-5. RMU couldn't get back on the board in their final two at bats. Annie Dubovec (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits.
Robert Morris returns to action on Thursday, April 3 as they host Cleveland State for a pair of games.
