Robert Morris Tops Saint Peter's 3-0

In the concluding match of the Robert Morris Invitational, the Colonials, led by sixth year head coach Rob Thomas, topped the Saint Peter's Peahens in straight sets (25-18,25-22,25-16). Robert Morris finished the tournament with an even 2-2 record. In the win, senior libero Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) moved into second in the career record books for digs with 1,590.

The Colonials dominated throughout the entire match, starting set one hitting .355 as a team to the Peahens .156. Senior Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) took charge in the first set earning four kills on five attempts, while middle blocker Jaye Hellmich (Costa Mesa, Calif. / Estancia) and outside hitter Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) each added three.

Saint Peter's came back in set two to challenge the Colonials a bit harder than they did in the first set.  They managed to defend a few more hard hits by Robert Morris, but the Colonials were able to rally their way to the 25-22 victory.

Robert Morris quickly ended the match in set three by a score of 25-16. The Colonials' superb defense gave them the edge over the Peahens, earning 63 digs to SPC's 38. The win was truly a team effort with sophomore Amanda Graham earning eight kills and Drabant, Wolthuis, Hellmich and senior opposite Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) contributing seven kills apiece. Gibson and freshman setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) put in double-digit digs with 10 and 13, respectively.  Graham grabbed a team high four blocks and Bennett finished with a match high 34 assists.

The Colonials are now 8-3 and will return home to face cross-town rival Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
