Colonials Overcome Red Flash to Win 3-2

Corinne Moser tallies a career-high 22 digs

Loretto, Pa.  - October 14, 2009 - The Robert Morris University Colonials faced their second consecutive five-set match on Wednesday night against the Saint Francis (Pa.) Red Flash, but this time the Colonials came away with the win. The victory improves the Colonials to 7-15 overall and 4-1 in NEC play, while the Red Flash drop to 4-17 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Colonials started off the set with the first point when junior Corinne Moser (Meyersdale, Pa. / Meyersdale) captured a service ace. The Red Flash were able to side-out the next point to even the score 1-1. The score remained relatively even until 9-9 when freshman Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) recorded her first kill of the match, which was followed by two Saint Francis (Pa.) errors to put RMU up 12-9. The Red Flash called a time-out, but Robert Morris came back and continued their scoring streak with back-to-back kills from freshman Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun). Robert Morris continued to lead, but the Red Flash was able to crawl its way back into the set off kills from Danielle Reese and Shirley Miller to knot the score 20-20. However, the Colonials picked up their momentum and Monger ended the match 25-21 with two more kills.

Set two was just as tight as the first, but the Red Flash gained an advantage by registering 17 kills to RMU's 13 and won 25-22. Robert Morris started off with the first point again, but Saint Francis (Pa.) responded right back. The teams continued to trade points and neither team was able to get on a significant run. The Red Flash gained a 23-20 lead with a kill by Reese, but RMU was able to bring the score within one off a kill from junior Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) and an error by SFPA. The Red Flash were finally able to wrap up the set with a put down by Lauren Wingard.

Saint Francis (Pa.) dominated the third set tallying 14 kills to RMU's five and holding the Colonials to a .000 hitting percentage, which led them to a 25-17 win and a one set advantage.

The Colonials recovered in the fourth set by winning a 26-24 nail biter. The Red Flash led the fourth set for a majority of play and earned its largest lead at 11-6. However, Robert Morris was slowly able to cut into the Red Flash lead. The Red Flash led for the entire set until Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) tied the score 23-23 with a kill. The Red Flash were able to side-out, but Graham came through once again for the Colonials and tallied two consecutive kills to win the game 26-24 and force a fifth set.

The Colonials took the momentum from the fourth set win and cruised to a 15-8 finish in the final set. With the score tied at 3-3, Monger secured a kill that started a four point run by Robert Morris. The Colonials never relinquished that lead to earn the set win and their first five-set match win of the season.

Middle blockers Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and Graham led the Colonials with 12 and 10 kills apiece. Veith tallied her second double-digit kill match of the season and recorded a season high hitting percentage of .667. Graham also led the squad with seven blocks and Moser captured a career-high 22 digs.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they take on NEC foe Sacred Heart at 3:00 p.m.
