Albany, N.Y. - Junior kicker Garrett Clawson's (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) 20-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Robert Morris University football team to its third straight victory Saturday afternoon with a 13-10 win over Albany at University Field.
The Colonials improved to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast Conference, while the Great Danes, which had their school record 12-game home winning streak snapped, fell to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Senior quarterback Camdin Crouse (Snow Shoe, Pa. / Bald Eagle), subbing for freshman starter Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands), engineered the winning drive by marching RMU 79 yards on 14 plays to set up Clawson's game-winning field goal.
Crouse completed all four of his passing attempts for 53 yards in the final possession of the game, hitting sophomore tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) for two passes that totaled 18 yards and senior wide receiver Sherrod Evers (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastbaum Area) for a 12-yard completion down to the Albany 14-yard line.
The biggest completion for Crouse during the drive went to junior wide receiver D.J. Zalewski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler), who came back to haul in a 22-yard completion on 2nd-and-11 that gave the Colonials possession at the Albany 39-yard line.
Junior halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) rushed for 24 yards in the final drive, while Crouse's two-yard dive to the three-yard line of the Great Danes gave the Colonials a first down. Two plays later Clawson hit the 20-yard field goal to win it.
Robert Morris took an early 7-0 advantage by taking the opening kickoff and marching 32 yards on nine plays before Sinclair connected with junior fullback Jeff Link (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany) for a three-yard touchdown pass. The drive was set up by a great kickoff return from sophomore return specialist Anthony Coleman (Cheltenham, Md. / St. John's), as he opened the game with a 58-yard kickoff return to the Albany 32-yard line.Â
The Great Danes trimmed their deficit to 7-3 at the 4:01 mark of the second quarter when Sean Kenny connected for a 24-yard field goal, but the Colonials stretched their lead to 10-3 at halftime when Clawson converted a 39-yard field goal with just four seconds left before the break.Â
Crouse was key in setting up the final score of the half for Robert Morris, as he was inserted with just 21 seconds to play in the second quarter and completed a 31-yard pass to Evers to help set up Clawson's first field goal of the contest.Â
The score remained 10-3 entering the fourth quarter when Albany tied the score, 10-10, on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Vinny Esposito to Paul Booker with 7:58 remaining. The Colonials and Great Danes each went three-and-out before Crouse led the drive for the winning score.
Crouse finished 6-for-7 passing for 90 yards in relief of Sinclair, who completed nine of his 20 passing attempts for 50 yards and a touchdown. Russ compiled 87 yards rushing on 31 carries, while Evers and King combined for nine catches for 92 yards. Evers caught five balls for 62 yards, while King recorded four receptions for 30 yards.
RMU held Albany running back David McCarty to just 36 yards rushing on 14 carries and on the game the Great Danes finished with 217 yards of total offense. Esposito was 13-for-31 passing for 168 yards and a score but was intercepted twice and suffered five sacks.
Junior linebacker Alex DiMichele (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sto-Rox) posted 10 tackles to lead the defense, while senior linebacker Adam Lawrence (Big Run, Pa. / Dubois Area) and junior linebacker Elias Navarro (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / South Plantation) each finished with seven tackles. Lawrence posted three sacks, while Navarro finished with a sack and an interception.
The Colonials search for their fourth straight victory Saturday, Nov. 14, when they welcome Wagner to Joe Walton Stadium for a Noon kickoff.
