Colonials Surge Past Bonnies, 5-2

Senior Brooke Panepinto notched two home runs to lead the way

Moon Township, Pa. - On Wednesday afternoon, the Robert Morris University softball team braved the wet weather to take on the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure in what was scheduled to be a double header.  The Colonials downed SBU 5-2 in the first game, but due to torrential rain the second contest was canceled.

Despite the wet conditions, RMU's offense pushed forward to lead the Colonials to victory.  Senior Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) blasted two home runs in back-to-back plate appearances as she tallied four of Robert Morris' five RBI.

The Colonials managed to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Panepinto went deep for the first time of the afternoon over the center field fence.

St. Bonaventure tied the game at one all in the top of the fourth. However, RMU reclaimed the lead when sophomore Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) hit her first home run of the season to put the Colonials back on top, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning.

The Bonnies answered with another run in the top half of the fifth, but the Colonials managed to seal the victory as Panepinto hit her second round tripper of the day.  Her three-run blast put Robert Morris up 5-2 for the win.

Although the second game was initially started, heavy rain prohibited the contest to go past the second inning as it was canceled.

This Saturday, Robert Morris will kick off NEC Conference play as they make a road trip out east to take on Monmouth and Mount St. Mary's.  The doubleheader at Monmouth will begin at 1:00 p.m. in West Long Branch, NJ.
