Fergus Named CHA Rookie of the Week

Moon Township, Pa. - Freshman forward Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team became the second Colonial in as many years to be named the College Hockey America (CHA) Rookie of the Week in the Colonials' opening week of the season it was recently announced in a league release.

Fergus becomes the fifth active Colonial to have claimed a league rookie honor after helping Robert Morris get off to a 2-0 start with a pair of blowout victories this past weekend.

Robert Morris has now won four of the past five CHA Rookie of the Week awards in the regular season as sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) won three of the past four to close the 2010-11 campaign.

Fergus finished with five points in her first two collegiate contests, garnering multi-point performances twice. It didn't take long for Fergus to make an impact in a RMU uniform as she provided an assist fewer than nine minutes into the Colonials' season opener against Lindenwood. She then became the first Colonial to reach two assists on the young season when she tallied a second-period helper. Fergus wasn't finished  yet, though, as she scored her first-collegiate goal in style in the third period as she recorded a shorthanded tally when she lifted a backhander into the net.

After an impressive debut, Fergus continued to fill up the score sheet in the series finale Saturday. She registered her first multi-goal game with a pair of scores to become one of just three Colonials in program history to tally consecutive multi-point games to open a season as RMU cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Fergus' three goals came on just eight shots, helping her finish with an efficient .375 shooting percentage. The rookie also added a +5 plus/minus on the weekend. She is the sixth active Colonial to have won a weekly league honor in her career.

Fergus was one of seven skaters to record at least five shots Saturday, helping RMU break its single-game school for shots with 61.

Robert Morris will look to continue its strong start this weekend as it closes its opening homestand with a two-game set against Minnesota State. The Colonials will host the Mavericks Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2:05 p.m.
