Robert Morris Rolls Past Canisius

PITTSBURGH, Pa.  - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey picked up goals from three different players earning a, 4-1, win against Canisius Saturday and set a new program record for wins in a season.

The Colonials (16-9-4, 11-7-4) scored early and often as Robert Morris picked up win against the Golden Griffins (9-13-6, 8-8-5). Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) found the net twice and assisted on a third goal leading the Colonials to a victory against his former team. Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) earned the win in his first start since Jan. 7 at North Dakota.

Robert Morris came out determined in the first period and took the early lead thanks to a power-play goal from Brace, who transferred from Canisius to Robert Morris after his freshman season. Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) earned the assists. Ostergard stopped 13 shots in the first fame including five while the Colonials were on the penalty kill.

Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) extended the lead in the second period with his sixth goal of the season at the 2:19 mark of the second frame. Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) lead a break out play for the Colonials and found Cramer backdoor with a cross ice pass. Ostergard turned all 18 shots he faced in the second period.

Urban moved the lead to three with his eighth goal of the season, the senior assistant captain found the net at the 15:25 mark of the third period. It did not take long for the Colonials to push their advantage as Brace found the net for the second time 10 seconds later to push the lead to four. Cory Conacher netted the only Canisius goal of the net with 14 seconds left on the clock.

Ostergard finished game with 48 saves. The junior netminders also turned away 11 power-play shots as the Colonials went 5-of-5 of the penalty kill. Robert Morris went 1-of-4 on the power play scoring for the second time in as many games with man advantage after a four game drought on the power play.    

The Colonials return to action against in-state conference rival Mercyhurst at the Island Sports Center Feb. 11.

Game Notes

- Nathan Longpre extended his point streak to nine games Saturday. The senior assistant captain has a point in 16 of his last 17 games with six multi-point games during the streak. The streak is the second longest in school history.

- Denny Urban recorded his fourth multi-point game in his last five games. The senior assistant has eight points in his last five games.

- The Colonial record four or more goal for the second consecutive game. It is the first time Robert Morris has found the net four or more times in back-to-back games since Dec. 10 (Dec. 4, W 5-1 vs. Bentley, Dec. 10, W 4-3 at Alabama Huntsville).   

- The Colonials went 11-for-11 on the penalty kill in their two games with Canisius after allowing three power-play goal in their previous 12 kill opportunities.

- Jimmy Geerin recorded his first career point in the second period picking up the second assist on Ron Cramer's goal.
