Robert Morris Takes Down the Knights in Four Sets

Box Score

Hackensack, N.J. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team returned to action a day after a five-set defeat and shook off the loss to defeat the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in four sets by the scores of 18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 30-28 on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening set of the match, the Colonials fell behind early before rallying to tie the set at nine.  RMU would never hold the lead in the set as the Knights would go on a five-point run to pull ahead.  The Colonials were unable to recover and would drop the set by a score of 18-25.

After dropping their fourth-consecutive set in the weekend, the Colonials would turn their fortunes around in the second set against FDU.  Robert Morris would take an early two-point lead before the Knights would tie the score at nine.  This time, the Colonials were the ones who would claim the lead, thanks to a four-point run that saw them hold a 12-9 advantage.  RMU would not let this lead slip away as they outscored the Knights by a 2:1 ratio the rest of the way to win the set 25-15.

To start the third set, the two team would exchange the first twelve points to have the score tied 6-6.  Fairleigh Dickinson would open up a four-point advantage to put the Colonials down 9-13 before RMU would rally to tie the set at 16.  Robert Morris would take the lead in the set during a six-point run that saw them turn a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage with the score 19-16.  The advantage would never be relinquished by the Colonials as they would hold on to win the set 25-22.

The Knights would hold an early lead in the fourth set over the Colonials before the two teams would be deadlocked at nine.  In the middle of the match it would be Robert Morris' turn to hold the advantage as they opened up a four-point advantage with the score 18-14 before the FDU would score four straight to tie the set at 18.  The Colonials missed the opportunity to close out the set in regulation and had to fight for the victory by the score of 30-28.

The Robert Morris attack was led by the senior duo of Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) and Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) who both recorded fifteen or more kills.  Sophomore Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) recorded her third 40+ assists match with a season-high 44 assists.  Five Colonials, including Hoffman and Monger, registered at least ten digs in the contest.  The middle blocking tandem of sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) and freshman Kristin Thompson (Monroe, Ohio / Bishop Fenwick) each recorded a solo block.  Thompson's block sealed the match for the Colonials as it put them ahead by two in the fourth set.

Robert Morris will hit the road again next weekend for a single match at Bryant on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
