RMU Drops Second Consecutive NEC Match

The Colonials fall to 5-2 in conference after five-set loss to Sacred Heart.

Fairfield, Conn. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team dropped its second consecutive Northeast Conference match as it fell in five sets against Sacred Heart by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 27-29, 13-15.

In the first set, the Colonials held the advantage for the first half of the set until Sacred Heart tied it at 16.  The Pioneers would hold a brief advantage with the score 18-19 before the Colonials would score seven of the final nine points to win the set 25-21.  Sacred Heart would control the majority of the second set before Robert Morris would take their first lead of the set with the score 22-21.  The Colonials closed out the set outscoring the Pioneers by a 2:1 margin to go up two sets with the score 25-23.

Coming out of the intermission, the two teams would trade the lead multiple times before the Pioneers would pull ahead.  RMU would rally to tie the match at 19 before Sacred Heart would close out the set with six of the final seven points with the score 20-25.  Looking to avoid a fifth set, the Colonials would jump out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth.  Sacred Heart would battle back to tie the set and the two teams would trade points and keep each other within two points.  The fourth set would go past the 25 points as neither team would develop a two-point advantage over the other until Sacred Heart would force a fifth set with a 27-29 victory.

In the decisive fifth set, both teams would exchange points early until the Colonials opened up a four-point advantage with the score 13-9.  Six consecutive points for the Pioneers would turn the tables on Robert Morris as Sacred Heart rallied from a two-set deficit to win 13-15 in the fifth set.

Senior Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) led the Colonials with 12 kills as she registered her 12th double-double of the season.  Sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) hit .667 (eight kills on twelve attempts) while also contributing nine block assists to the RMU effort.

The Colonials will hit the court again tomorrow afternoon as they face Fairleigh Dickinson in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
