Robert Morris Sweeps Keystone State Foe

The Colonials pick up their tenth NEC victory in win over Saint Francis.

Loretto, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team traveled to Saint Francis (Pa.) for a mid-week match against the Red Flash.  The Colonials would prevail in straight sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 en route to their tenth Northeast Conference victory.

In the first set, RMU woul take the first two points before Saint Francis would tie the set at three.  The Red Flash would hold the advantage for a few points before the Colonials would take five consecutive points to regain the lead with the score 9-6.  SFU would pull within one point with the score 11-10 before the Colonials would go on another five-point run to increase their lead to six points at 16-10.  The Red Flash would again make it close as they were within striking distance of RMU, but a third five-point run in the set put the set away for the Colonials with the score 25-18.

The second set would see the Colonials fall behind early before tying the set at four points each.  The two teams would battle back and forth trading off points before Robert Morris would pull ahead for the time being.  RMU would go ahead by as many as three points before Saint Francis would rally to tie the set at 16.  The Colonials would not hand over the lead as they took the next three points to put some distance between themselves and the Red Flash.  RMU would close out the set by a score of 25-20.

Coming out of the intermission, the two teams would trade off the first fourteen points with neither of them holding more than two-point advantage.  Robert Morris would take four straight points from the Red Flash to gain a lead that the team would never relinquish.  Saint Francis would come within two points of the Colonials but RMU would expand its lead to as many as seven points before taking the final set 25-19 for the sweep.

Aided by 43 errors by the Red Flash, the Colonials would hit .178 with 25 kills in the match.  Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) would assist on each of the 25 kills while also contributing a game-high four service aces in the three-set match.  Sophomore Erica Robb (Novi, Mich / Novi) paced the squad with nine kills while fellow sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) hit a team-high .455 (6 kills, 11 attempts).  Seniors Una Japundza (Rovinj, Croatia / Zvane Crnja) and Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) each supported the victory with their defensive efforts.  Japundza would record five total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists) while Monger would record a game-high 13 digs.

Robert Morris returns to the Sewall Center for a pair of NEC contests over the weekend as Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson will make the trip westward.  The Pioneers will face RMU on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. before the Knights of FDU come in for a Sunday afternoon contest.
