Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team lost its first NEC match on Sunday afternoon as they fell in straight sets to LIU-Brooklyn by scores of 23-25, 15-25, 21-25.
In the first set, Robert Morris fell behind early 1-6 before rallying to tie the set at 13. The Blackbirds would rally off the next four point to take a 13-17 advantage before RMU went on a run of its own. The seven-point run for the Colonials would give the squad their first lead of the set with the score 20-17. LIU-Brooklyn would tiel the set at 20 before taking the lead for good. The Colonials tried to force the set past 25 points but fell just short losing 23-25.
The second set belonged to LIU-Brooklyn as they would not let the Colonials obtain the lead at all in the set. The closest that Robert Morris would get would be within one point and that was when the score was 2-3. The Blackbirds would have their largest lead when the Colonials were ten points behind at multiple points in the set, including the final score of 15-25.
In the third set, RMU would hold and early advantage before LIU-Brooklyn would tie the score a 7. The Colonials regain the lead and create a five-point cushion with the score 18-13. The Blackbirds would close out the set and the match scoring twelve of the final fifteen points to make the final score 21-25.
Leading the way for Robert Morris was senior Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) who tallied nine kills while hitting .304. Fellow senior Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) registered ten digs in the match.
The Colonials will hit the road for a pair of road contests as they will travel to Sacred Heart for a Saturday afternoon match before heading to Fairleigh Dickinson for a match Sunday afternoon. Both matches are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
