Pittsburgh, March 21, 2012 – Robert Morris University and 84
Lumber Company are pleased to announce that the home ice of the university's
NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs has been named the 84 Lumber
Arena, effective March 21, 2012.
The 84 Lumber
Arena is part of the RMU Island Sports Center, which also hosts numerous youth and
adult ice hockey leagues and tournaments. The center is the region's premier sports and
recreation destination, located on Neville Island just nine miles from downtown
Pittsburgh. Open to the public year-round, the facility offers a variety of
activities including public skating, skating lessons, inline skating and
hockey, indoor soccer and softball, an indoor golf driving range, and miniature
golf.
“84 Lumber
has been a significant sponsor of hockey at all levels throughout the years,
from the Penguins to the PIHL and America's Showcase. This
partnership of adding the naming rights to an arena that is host to both men's
and women's Division I NCAA hockey programs is a logical extension,” said Jeff Nobers, vice president of marketing at 84
Lumber. “The RMU Island Sports Center hosts tens of thousands of patrons every
year so being able to attach our name to a great facility and university offers
benefits that go well beyond the marketing benefits.”
The Robert
Morris Colonials are the only NCAA Division I ice hockey programs in
southwestern Pennsylvania. This year, the women's team won the College Hockey
America tournament championship for the first time, dethroning nine-time
defending champion Mercyhurst. The men's team advanced to the Atlantic Hockey
Association quarterfinals this year, and both programs have racked up numerous victories
over nationally ranked teams.
In 2013, RMU
is hosting the NCAA Men's Frozen Four ice hockey championships at CONSOL Energy
Center.
"84
Lumber and the RMU Island Sports Center are perfect partners, with 84 Lumber's
strong support of all levels of ice hockey and the RMU Island Sports Center's being
home to a wide variety of hockey programs," said Dave Hanson, executive
director of the center.
