Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Villanova, Pa. - The Robert
Morris University volleyball
team finished up play at the Villanova Classic with a pair of non-conference
setbacks. First, RMU fell to Maryland in
straight sets 20-25, 21-25, 12-25. In
the nightcap, host Villanova also swept Robert Morris 17-25. 25-27, 23-25. Senior Lindsey
Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In
the opening game against Maryland, Monger led all players with five service
aces while sophomore Melissa Bograd
(Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) recorded 14 digs, tying a game-high. For the second straight game, sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan)
recorded the only solo block for either team.
In
the opening set, the two teams traded points and at one point the Colonials
held a slim advantage at 9-8. That was
the only lead RMU would see at Maryland went on an 11-4 run and held that
advantage to win the first set 25-20. In
the second set, the Colonials would jump out to an early lead but once again
they were unable to maintain that advantage and fell in the second set
21-25. In the third and final set, the
Terrapins turned the tables and took an early 8-1 advantage that Robert Morris
would never recover from. The Colonials
fell 12-25 as Maryland completed the sweep.
In
the nightcap, the Colonials came out firing and gained an early lead against
Villanova. The Wildcats then rattled off
ten unanswered points to take a commanding 11-4 lead. That lead in the first set would never be matched
by Robert Morris as it lost the set 12-20.
The second set proved to be much more closely contested before Villanova
would edge the Colonials 27-25. Neither
team held a lead of more than three points and traded that lead multiple times
before the Wildcats came out on top.
Much like the second set, the third set was also tightly contested. The Colonials held the lead most of the match
until the Wildcats went on a 9-5 run to close out the match 25-23.
Monger
held the game-high with thirteen kills and 14.5 points against Villanova while
Bograd tied the game-high with two service aces.
The
Colonials return home next weekend as they co-host the Duquesne/Robert Morris
Invitational. Robert Morris will play
their first match Friday, Aug. 31, as they host Bucknell at 7:00 p.m.
