Colonials Sweep Central Connecticut State

Box Score

New Britain, Conn. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team continued their Northeast Conference play as they took down Central Connecticut State in straight sets Saturday afternoon.  The Colonials took the sets by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-22.

As a team, RMU hit .330 in the three-set match as seniors Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) and Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun Md. / Rising Sun) both hit above .350 while collecting double-digit kills.  Fellow senior Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) registered 14 digs in the sweep.  The Colonials recorded eight blocks in the match and sophomore Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Pauda Franciscan) assisted on six of the eight.

In the first set, the Colonials came out with an early 4-2 advantage before the Blue Devils tied the set at four.  Robert Morris would pull ahead by two points three more times before the score would become tied again at eleven.  With RMU up 11-9, the Blue Devils would score the next four points to force the Colonials to call a timeout down 11-13.  RMU would rally to tie the set at fourteen before the two teams traded points for the next four serves.  The Colonials would finally pull away as they scored seven of the final ten points for a 25-21 set victory.

The second set played out very similar to the first as the teams started out evenly matched.  The Colonials held a slight advantage until the game became tied at seven.  CCSU went on a five-point run that gave them a 7-10 lead before Robert Morris would rally to tie the game at ten.  Again, the teams would trade points until the score was sixteen all; at that point the Blue Devils would open up a three-point lead with the score 18-21.  The Colonials would respond by closing out the set scoring seven of the final eight points to finish with the score 25-22.

The final set saw the same back-and-forth action as the first two.  RMU jumped out to an early lead by scoring four of the first five points before CCSU would respond to tie the set at five.  The Blue Devils would hold a three-point lead of their own with the score 12-9.  Just as with the prior sets, the Colonials would rally back.  The team would bring the set to a draw at fourteen points each.  The two squads alternated points until Central Connecticut State gained an advantage with the score 18-20.  Robert Morris again finished strong as it captured seven of the final nine points to win the set 25-22.

Robert Morris returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they finish up the roadtrip to Connecticut with a 2:00 p.m. match against Quinnipiac.  The Colonials will have a quick turn-around as they return home for a Wednesday night match against Saint Francis (Pa.) in the annual Dig Pink match to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
