Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – October 12, 2013 - The Robert Morris University volleyball team resumed Northeast Conference play with a pivotal conference showdown against Central Connecticut.  Despite middle blocker Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) recording 11 kills while hitting .500, the Colonials would be swept by the Blue Devils; 22-25, 14-25, 22-25.

The match marked the third time this season that Jay has recorded ten or more kills and the third time that she has hit at least .500 in a match.

The opening set of the match saw Robert Morris (3-17, 2-3 NEC) fall behind early after allowing Central Connecticut (12-7, 3-2 NEC) to earn the first three points.  The Colonials would battle back and tie the set at 11-11 but they were unable to take the lead as the Blue Devils took the next three points.  After the run by Central Connecticut, RMU responded with a three-point run of its own to again tie the score, this time at 14-14.  Again, the Colonials were unable to gain control of the lead as this time a four-point run by the Blue Devils had RMU facing another deficit.  Robert Morris would battle back again, as they came within a point of Central Connecticut with the score 23-22 before the Blue Devils took the final two points to earn the first set victory, 25-22.

Central Connecticut would control the second set as the Blue Devils took the first four points and dug a hole that Robert Morris was unable to climb out of.  On the offensive side of the ball, the Colonials were unable to string more than two points together before giving the serve back to the Blue Devils.  Central Connecticut closed out the set by taking nine of the final ten points that included a run of six points to take the second set by a score of 25-14.

For the majority of the third set, Robert Morris would hold control of the lead.  The Colonials biggest lead was eight points when the score was 13-5 after a span of play in which they took eight of a possible nine points.  Up 22-18, RMU lost control of the set as Central Connecticut rallied with seven consecutive points to take the set, 25-22, and sweep the match.

Assisting Jay with the Robert Morris attack was April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) who notched nine kills while hitting .421.  Defensively, the Colonials were led on the court by Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) who recorded ten digs.  Along the net, RMU would record five blocks, Krivoniak and Jay would each have a hand in three of them.

Robert Morris will closes out the weekend with a match against Bryant on Sunday afternoon.  First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
