Box Score
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – October 13, 2013 - The
Robert Morris University volleyball team recovered from a loss on Saturday to sweep the Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon; 25-19, 25-23, 25-22.
Freshman
April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) hit .500 in the match while recording a match-high 14 kills for Robert Morris (4-17, 3-3 NEC).
Bryant (7-17, 3-3 NEC) held the lead early in the set until the Colonials took over the lead with the score 4-3. From there, RMU would never look back as runs of three and four points opened up a six-point advantage when the score was 14-8. The Bulldogs would fight back with a four-point run of their own to pull within two points, 14-12, but Robert Morris fended off the attack to remain in the lead. RMU would finish with a six-point lead as the final score of the opening set was 25-19 in favor of the Colonials.
Robert Morris would start the second set with the lead, but a four-point run by Bryant would give the Bulldogs their only taste of the lead in the set with the score 9-8. Just four rallies later, the Colonials would regain control of the advantage and grow their lead to six points, 18-12, after taking nine of a possible eleven points in the middle of the set. Bryant would put up a fight and battle back to tie the set, 19-19, but RMU held on to take the second set by a score of 25-23.
Despite getting the first point of the third set, Robert Morris would trail early on before recapturing the lead when the score was 9-8. A five-point run just a few rallies later would put the Bulldogs in a hole too big for them to climb out of. Bryant would try to battle back with a four-point streak that closed the gap between the two squads to two points, 17-15. The Colonials would maintain a big enough gap that even a three-point run by the Bulldogs when facing match point would not be enough as the Colonials finished the sweep with a victory in the third set by a score of 25-22.
Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) assisted Krivoniak with the Robert Morris attack as she recorded 11 kills while also supplying 12 digs on the defensive side for her sixth double-double of the season. Not to be outdone,
Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) recorded a match-best 15 digs while
Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) contributed ten digs.
The Colonials will continue their five-game road trip as they step out of conference play for the final time when they travel to West Virginia. The match is scheduled for Wednesday evening with first serve at 6:30 p.m.
