MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – October 27, 2013 - The
Robert Morris University volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut State in four sets on Sunday afternoon; 25-12, 23-25, 20-25, 24-26. Despite the loss, the Colonials remain in contention for a 15th-consecutive Northeast Conference postseason berth, currently sitting in fourth place.
The .607 attack percentage for Robert Morris (6-19, 5-4 NEC) in the first set victory over Central Connecticut (16-7, 7-2 NEC) was the highest percentage in a single set this season and the highest in a set since the 2008 squad hit .654 in the third set against St. Francis Brooklyn, a span of 170 matches. Six of the eight Colonials that saw action in the opening set would record a kill as the group was led by
Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) who recorded six kills.
Despite dropping the second set, Robert Morris would record more blocks than Central Connecticut. Of the five blocks recorded by RMU in the set,
Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) would have a hand in four of them.
The two teams would play a statistically-even third set although it was Central Connecticut that would prevail to hold the advantage in the match. Despite recording fewer kills than the Blue Devils, Robert Morris would record a higher attack percentage and the only solo block of the set which was recorded by
Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa).
The Colonials would extend the fourth set past the 25-point mark before suffering the defeat, 26-24. RMU recorded more kills, assists, aces, and digs than the Blue Devils while each team made five blocks in the deciding set.
In the match, Fisher would record a match-high 16 kills and 17.5 points.
April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) would support Fisher's effort with 13 kills over the four sets.
Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) registered a match-high 26 digs, two shy of her personal best. As a team, the Colonials would record 13 blocks; the squad was led by Jay who recorded eight block assists. Hoffman finished the match with two solo blocks, two block assists, while assisting of 47 of Robert Morris' 56 kills.
Robert Morris will host Saint Francis U. on Saturday evening with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
