Top Story
- The Robert Morris University football team completes its two-game road trip this Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1:00 p.m. as the Colonials travel to take on former Northeast Conference (NEC) member Monmouth in a non-conference affair at Kessler Field at Monmouth Stadium. The Colonials are coming off of a thrilling, 37-31, double overtime at Big South member VMI. RMU rallied from a 10-point deficit with fewer than 20 minutes left to take the lead but had to hold on as VMI forced an extra period late in regulation. Junior cornerback Antwan Eddie returned a punt 88 yards for his first-career touchdown and was subsequently named NEC Special Teams Player of the Week. He currently leads the nation in punt return average at the FCS level. RMU snapped a couple of long droughts last weekend as it scored its first special teams touchdown and also played its first overtime game since 2006. After playing the Hawks, RMU will enjoy its final bye of the season next weekend before resuming action Saturday, Oct. 19, when it hosts local rival Duquesne on Homecoming under the lights in its league opener.

Quick Stat of the Afternoon - Robert Morris is set to play longtime foe Monmouth this weekend. For much of their series, the Colonials and Hawks met as league opponents as they played Northeast Conference games year after year. However, with Monmouth's recent departure from the NEC, the two foes will be meeting as non-conference opponents this year for the first time since 1995. Saturday's game will mark the 19th time in program history in which RMU has played a non-league game against an opponent who at one point was in the NEC. The Colonials hold an overall mark of 9-8-1 (.528) in these types of games and have not played one since the 2008 season. Robert Morris and Monmouth met in non-conference games in both 1994 and 1995 before having 16 straight NEC matchups. Both of those non-league meetings were close as RMU won, 26-19, in the first-ever meeting before the Hawks came back with a 16-13 win in 1995.

Monmouth Quick Outs -
Robert Morris has won each of the past three meetings in New Jersey, two of which were by a mere three points … This is the first non-conference meeting between these schools since 1995 … RMU and Monmouth split the two prior non-league matchups … 11 of the 18 meetings between the Colonials and Hawks have been decided by eight points or fewer, including six games by a field goal or less … Duane Mitchell had a career-high 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns in last year's meeting … The team that has gained more total yards of offense has actually lost each of the past three meetings and four of the last six overall … Only one time in the past 12 meetings has either team scored 30 points in a game (Monmouth scored 34 in 2008).

On This Date (Oct. 5) in Robert Morris Football History - Robert Morris won its first-ever game on October 5 in 1996. That contest is also the only prior non-conference game played on this date in RMU history. The Colonials scored 14 points in the first quarter, tacked on another 17 in the second stanza, claiming a substantial 31-0 halftime advantage, and cruised to a 40-7 win over Gannon. Five different Colonials scored touchdowns in the victory as Robert Morris racked up 424 yards of total offense while holding the Golden Knights to just 112 yards, including a mere 29 passing yards. Jake Newman (1994-97) was efficient at the helm as he completed 13-of-19 passes for 247 yards and threw for three scores. Fred Parker (1996-98) caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers. Brandon Baldwin (1995-96) caught the lone TD pass of his career that day while Joe Parlette (1996-97) also hauled in a touchdown. Brian Dunn (1994-97) and Dante Payne (1994-97) both tallied interceptions to aid the RMU defense.

Head Coach Joe Walton (20th season; Pittsburgh '57) - At the forefront of t
he football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 20-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region.

The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team's inaugural season in 1994. He owns an overall record of 111-88-1 (.558).

Walton's fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC's inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.

"It's hard to believe," Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. "I've said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn't anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I've loved every minute of it."

Under Walton's tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette.

In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC's first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Last Time Out -
Senior Deontae Howard turned the left corner and sprinted into the end zone from 17 yards out to conclude the game and give Robert Morris a thrilling, 37-31, win in double overtime at VMI … RMU broke team single-game records for most punt return yards (154) and highest gain per punt return (38.5) … True freshman Andy Smigiera added 168 all-purpose yards on seven returns in what was his first game serving as a return man for RMU … Howard finished with a career-best 100 yards rushing and also caught a pass … Redshirt senior Kyle Cooper posted a game best and career-high 13 tackles … Kimani Smith added a career-best eight tackles, including three TFL.

Player of the Week x2 - Junior Antwan Eddie was selected as NEC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in a month this week. He returned two punts for a combined 110 yards last week, including an 88-yard touchdown. The 88-yard return broke the school record for longest punt return. It is also the longest return of either a kick or punt by any NEC player thus far this season. Eddie has racked up 224 yards on 10 punt returns this season. His 22.4 average currently leads the nation and would be a single-season school record if it is maintained. Eddie became just the second Colonial, and first RMU returner, to win multiple special teams honors in the same season.

Add It Up - Robert Morris broke a notable school record last time out at VMI. The Colonials racked up a single-game best 745 all-purpose yards, topping the prior record, which was set in the program's inaugural season, by 60 yards. The Colonials had 448 yards of total offense, its most in a road game since 2004, and 297 return yards to achieve the feat. Six Colonials contributed at least 75 all-purpose yards on the day.

New High - A number of Colonial receivers set or reset career highs in last Saturday's victory at VMI. Donte Jeter caught a career-high eight passes and hit the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in his career. Duane Mitchell added a career-best six receptions. Meanwhile Sean Gavin, playing in his first collegiate game, posted four catches for 79 yards while fullback Corey Garry contributed his first-ever catch.

Throw It Around - Junior Paul Jones had a breakout game for the Colonials in last week's win at VMI. He completed 22 passes for a season-best 321 yards while also throwing for two touchdowns. His passing yardage marked the first time a Colonial had surpassed 300 yards since Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) pulled the trick in the 2005 season finale. He became only the third distinct Colonial ever to throw for at least 320 yards in a game.

OT Finally - Entering last Saturday's game against VMI, Robert Morris had played 72 consecutive games that ended in regulation, the longest such stretch in program history. In fact, every other current member of the NEC had played at least one overtime game since RMU's last such contest. However, that all changed against the Keydets as the squads were tied, 31-31, after 60 minutes of action. RMU pulled out the victory in the double overtime when Deontae Howard scored from 17 yards out. Before that instance, the most recent time the Colonials headed to overtime was Oct. 14, 2006 when RMU upset No. 19 Central Connecticut State, 23-17 (2OT), in what was the program's first-ever game against a nationally ranked opponent. Erik Cwalinski (2005-08) hooked up with Mario Hines (2004, 2006-07) for a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-12 in that 2006 game. That means that each of the last two times RMU has headed to overtime, the Colonials have won in the second extra session.
