Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – November 10, 2013 - The Robert Morris University volleyball squad took on a possible Northeast Conference Tournament opponent on Sunday afternoon when the Colonials took to the court against LIU Brooklyn.  After taking the first set from the Blackbirds, RMU would fall in four sets; 26-24, 14-25, 8-25, 18-25.

Robert Morris (8-20, 7-5 NEC) would take the first set from LIU Brooklyn (19-7, 12-0 NEC) after relinquishing the lead midway through the set only to regain the advantage in the final points.  The Colonials came out firing early and built a 7-3 advantage that was held until the Blackbirds went on a five-point run to take the lead when the score was 19-16.  RMU responded with a four-point run of its own to regain the lead, 20-19.  The two teams would then exchange points until Robert Morris took the final two points with a pair of kills by Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) to take the opening set, 26-24.

The Colonials were unable to build on the first set victory as they dropped the second set.  The Blackbirds would take the first two points of the set and would not allow RMU to taste the lead.  The big blow to Robert Morris in the set would come when the Blackbirds strung together seven-consecutive points before taking the set, 25-14.

The third set would not differ much from the second despite the two teams trading points early in the set.  The Blackbirds would go on a five-point run to take the lead, 7-3, and allowed the Colonials to take just five more points in the set.  A nine-point run would put the set away for the Blackbirds, 25-8.

Despite taking the first point of the fourth set, Robert Morris would trail the Blackbirds for the majority of the final frame.  After falling behind, the Colonials would rally to tie the set once before dropping the final set.  The Colonials were unable to string together multiple runs and also unable to hold the Blackbirds' offense off the board as RMU dropped the final set, 25-18.

Jay would lead the Colonials with 11 kills while also providing two blocks in the contest.  Kristin Thompson (Monroe, Ohio / Bishop Fenwick) and Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) also recorded multiple blocks against the Blackbird attack.  Behind the blockers, Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont), April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe), and Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) all recorded double-digit kills in the defeat.

Robert Morris returns home to finish the regular season with a pair of matches that have postseason implications.  The match against Sacred Heart on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. will have the biggest impact as the Pioneers currently sit one game ahead of the Colonials in the standings.
