MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – November 16, 2013 - The
Robert Morris University volleyball returned home for a pivotal Northeast Conference match against Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon. Facing off against the Pioneers, RMU would hold serve on its home court and sweep Sacred Heart; 25-18, 25-23, 25-23. The victory pulled the Colonials into a tie for third place in the NEC with the Pioneers.
As a team, Robert Morris (9-20, 8-5 NEC) would hit .306 in the match as
April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) led the attack with ten kills and a .556 hitting percentage. The Colonials held Sacred Heart (14-15, 8-5 NEC) to a .214 hitting percentage while the Pioneers committed 38 errors in the match.
RMU would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set after two kills from
Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan). The Colonials would maintain that lead for the entire set as they did not allow Sacred Heart to even tie the score at any point in the set as RMU took the first frame, 25-18.
Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) led the Robert Morris attack in the opening set with four kills while Krivoniak contributed three kills in the set.
Just like the first set, the Colonials would again take a 3-0 lead in the second set. Unlike the opening frame, Sacred Heart would rally to tie the set after RMU jumped out to the early lead. After the Pioneers tied the set at 14-14, Robert Morris took the next three points to maintain the lead. Sacred Heart again rallied to tie the set, this time with the score 22-22. The Colonials took three of the final four points and a solo block by
Kristin Thompson (Monroe, Ohio / Bishop Fenwick) capped of a 25-23 set victory for RMU.
The third set would finish with the same score as the second, but Robert Morris would hold the lead for the majority of the set after coming out to a 1-1 tie after the first two points of the final set. The Colonials then took the next three points to create the advantage that they would maintain through the final point. That final point came from a kill by Krivoniak to finish the set, 25-23.
Robb finished the match with nine kills while Jay and
Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) each contributed six kills in the victory. Jay also provided two of the three Colonial aces in the win.
Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) dished out 32 assists on the 38 recorded kills for RMU. Fisher, Krivoniak, and Robb each recorded double-digit digs as Fisher led the group with 13 digs. With 10 digs to go with her 10 kills, Krivoniak recorded her third double-double this season. Thompson concluded the match with three blocks while Fisher, Jay, and Robb each contributed two blocks.
Still in search of the third seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament, Robert Morris will conclude the regular season with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
