Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team went on a 20-6 run midway through the second half to seize control and dispatch the UMBC Retrievers, 51-39, in a non-conference game at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. The Colonials have now won three in a row and sit at 3-1 on the season. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Retrievers who sit 1-4 overall.

Senior Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) had 10 points with nine of those coming during the team's pivotal 20-6 run. She added four rebounds and four steals in 18 minutes of action. Senior Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) tallied 13 points and pulled down a season-high 20 rebounds. It was her 28th consecutive double-double extending the second-longest streak in NCAA DI history. Freshman Anna Niki Stamalamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Aristotelio College of Thessaloniki) tacked on 11 points.

"I am happy with the way made some good runs in the second half because we struggled for the most of the game. I thought Kelly Hartwell was a key. She brought a lot of enthusiasm and took the ball strong to the basket," said 11th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia.

A short jumper by Bridget O'Donnell brought the Retrievers to within four points, 31-27, just over five minutes into the second half. Following a three-minute scoring drought from both teams, Hartwell came up with a steal and was fouled on a breakaway lay-up attempt. She nailed the free throws, starting what would be a 20-6 run over the next 12:05. Hartwell scored nine points during the run by coming up with four steals and going 5-of-7 from the chalk. At the end of the surge, RMU held a 51-33 lead and just 2:41 was left in the game.

Stamalamprou opened the game with a three pointer 14 seconds after the tip-off and RMU would never trail in the game. Another three by the freshman guard gave Robert Morris a 9-2 lead. A 7-2 push by UMBC cut the Colonials lead to 16-14 with 7:30 remaining in the first half but the Colonials responded with a 7-0 answer following five straight points from sophomore Ashley Ravelli (Milano, Italy / The Hun School).

The Colonials managed to overcome a poor shooting night by forcing 17 turnovers and pulling down 22 offensive rebounds. RMU had 25 points off turnovers and tallied 14 second chance points.

Taylor McCarley led UMBC with nine points hitting 4-of-12 shots. Sara Talbert added eight points and had a team-high seven rebounds.

Robert Morris is off until Friday, Nov. 29, when it hosts the RMU Thanksgiving Classic. The Colonials kick-off the four-game, four-team, two-day event when they take on Northern Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Winthrop and UT-Martin meet in the second game of the afternoon.

Notes: Spanou reached the 20-rebound mark for the third time in her career. Her career high is 21 rebounds, an accomplishment she managed twice as a junior … Spanou's 28th consecutive double-double is the longest current streak in the nation and the second-longest streak in NCAA history (Courtney Paris, Oklahoma – 112) … Freshman Cassie Oursler (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) had six points and tied her season-high with seven rebounds ... RMU shot 29.5 percent (18-61) from the field … The Colonials outrebounded the Retrievers, 48-29, including 22-3 on the offensive glass.
