Box Score New Britain, Conn. / Detrick Gymnasium - The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team suffered a 69-60 loss at
Central Connecticut State as the Blue Devils were able to ride an early second
half run to victory at Detrick Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. Colonials senior
forward Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary #47) finished up with four
blocks on the afternoon, surpassing Kim Mong (1981-85) for the career record at
RMU as she now has 168.
"As we have done all year, we played hard for 40 minutes. We
continue to battle through everyone having to play an abundance of minutes and
once again we gave it everything we had," said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "I'm
disappointed in the way the season seems to be unfolding, but I'm not disappointed
in the effort these ladies have given playing under a very unfair situation in
regards to all the injuries we've suffered."
The Colonials fall to 7-21 overall and 6-11 in Northeast
Conference play while Central Connecticut State improves to 15-13 and 9-8 in
league games.
Gailite now holds the Robert Morris records for single-game
blocks (9), season blocks (60) and career blocks (168). She added six points
and seven rebounds to her stat line.
Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) recorded
her 23rd consecutive double-double as she tallied 28 points and 16 rebounds.
The 6-2 junior went 10-of-21 from the floor, added three blocks and tacked on
two assists while playing all 40 minutes. Junior guard Kelly Hartwell
(Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) added 12 points and had eight rebounds.
The critical run in Saturday's game came at the open of the
second half as Central Connecticut State used an 11-2 run to break open a
two-point game at the half. Kiirsten Daamen scored four straight during the run
before a Kelly Watras trey and a Jaclyn Babe steal and lay-in pushed the margin
to 11 points.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Hartwell cut the lead
to eight points, but RMU would no closer down the stretch. The Blue Devils
pushed the margin to as many as six points with 6:47 to play.
The first half was made up several runs by both squads. CCSU
opened the game by going 8-of-9 as Jessica Babe hit four early three-pointers.
A 7-0 run by the Colonials was started by Hartwell and Gailite jumpers before a
Spanou three put RMU on top, 11-10. The home-standing Blue Devils answered with
an 8-0 to retake the lead, 18-11. Robert Morris scored eight of the final 12
points in the opening frame to send the game into the break with CCSU leading,
30-28.
All five Central Connecticut State starters reached
double-digits in scoring led by Jessica Babe with 21 points. She added 12
rebounds as well. Jaclyn Babe tacked on 18 points and dished out eight assists
while Watras, Daamen and Jameilia Dillon each had 10 points.
