Colonials Claim Set in Loss against Rutgers

Robert Morris battles with the Scarlet Knights before falling in four sets.

Box Score Bloomington, Ind. – The Robert Morris University volleyball team finished up its three-game stint at the Indiana Invitational with an afternoon contest against Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.  After dropping the first set of the match by a score of 25-20, the Colonials earned their first set victory of the season in the second set, also 25-20, before falling in sets three and four, 25-21 and 25-22.

The first set saw the two teams trade the lead early on before Rutgers would take control.  Halfway through the set, Robert Morris would rebound and tie the set with the score 12-12.  The Colonials were unable to regain control of the lead and fell to the Scarlet Knights, 25-20.

Robert Morris would rebound in the second set with a 25-20 victory of its own to tie the match.  After the Scarlet Knights claimed the first point of the set, the Colonials responded and took the lead for good.  Despite Rutgers rallying to tie the score at three different points in the set (4-4, 15-15, and 16-16), RMU had an answer each time and did not relinquish control of the lead.  The Colonials capped off the set with a kill by Sydney Sizemore (Taylor Mill, Ky. / Holy Cross).

Entering the third set tied, the two teams would exchange the lead five times before Rutgers would claim a 2-1 advantage.  The Scarlet Knights would quickly jump out to an early three-point lead before the Colonials would rally to tie the score, 5-5.  Robert Morris would not hold its first lead of the set until the score was 8-7 while it was in the midst of a five-point run.  Up three, the Colonials would relinquish the lead as Rutgers tied the score, 12-12, before retaking the lead.  RMU would regain an advantage for a few plays later in the set with the score 17-16.  The lead would not last long as Rutgers took nine of the final thirteen points to close out the set by a score of 25-21.

The fourth set saw the debut of freshman Leah Dunivan (Troy, Ohio / Miami East).  Despite Rutgers jumping out to another early lead, Robert Morris responded by taking the lead with the score 5-4.  The Colonials would hold that lead until the Scarlet Knights would take it back with the score 16-15.  RMU would continue to battle but came up short as the Scarlet Knights finished off the match with a fourth set victory, 25-22.  In her only action of the Invitational, Dunivan recorded one kill and two block assists.

Arden Fisher (Oakmont, Pa. / Riverview) earned her first career double-double after leading the Colonials with 12 kills and also contributed 12 digs.  Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) paced Robert Morris with 13 digs.  As a team, RMU registered ten blocks and was led by April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) who personally registered five blocks.

Robert Morris returns home to co-host the Duquense/Robert Morris Invitational.  The matches start on Friday night when the Colonials play host to Xavier with a match scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
